Cherop and Chebet Shine in Riyadh Triumph

Key information to be aware of:
Uganda's total at the Games in Riyadh now stands at nine medals across four different events, with athletics contributing additional success following Rebecca Chelangat's gold in the 10,000 meters on Monday night.
On Tuesday evening, Sam Simba Cherop and Abel Chebet celebrated joyfully as they rolled out of the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Sports City Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The pair believed it was a gold-bronze treat following the men's 10,000 meters final on Day Three of the sixth Islamic Solidarity Games. Cherop thought he had surpassed Birhanu Balew from Bahrain at the finish line.
Instead, a short while later, officials declared that Balew had secured the 25-lap race championship. Both Balew and young Cherop recorded a time of 29 minutes and 6.58 seconds, but the Bahraini athlete managed to win by two thousandths of a second.
The Ugandan team raised objections, but it didn't lead to any success. "It was a strong race, and I think I deserved the gold if it hadn't been for the obstruction," Cherop stated.
Just before the tape, Cherop tried to move ahead of Birhanu from the inner side on the left, but the space appeared too narrow for the Ugandan, causing him to almost lose his balance.
"We had a good plan with Abel, but the kick came late. Still, I'm satisfied with what I achieved," Cherop added, noting that last year she finished fifth in the 5000 meters final at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru.
And the performance was quite promising for the young athlete who delivered an unforgettable competitive debut in the longest race on the track.
The 27-year-old Chebet has more experience and, similar to Cherop, is managed by Mont Pont Chafer. During a season with limited activity, Chebet was pleased to secure the bronze medal with a time of 29:07.63.
"The race was very strategic," Chebet said after securing another silver medal, which he had previously won three years ago at the Konya Games in Turkey. "Simba gave his maximum effort from the beginning. We could have easily taken first and second place, but we'll settle for silver and bronze," Chebet added.
Uganda's medal count at the Games in Riyadh now stands at nine, achieved across four different sports, with athletics contributing another success following Rebecca Chelangat's gold in the 10,000 meters on Monday night.
Athletics will conclude with nine athletes from Uganda set to compete on the light blue track. Tom Dradriga, who participated in the men's 1500 meters final last night, will now take part in the men's 800 meters final.
Later, Knight Aciru will bow at the Games in the women's 1500 meters final, which will also include Halimah Nakaayi. Nakaayi competed in the two-lap final yesterday.
Similar to Nakaayi and Dradriga, Cherop and Chebet have also qualified for the men's 5000 metres final. Meanwhile, Kenneth Omuka exited the men's 200 metres Heat 2 on Tuesday night, which means he will not be able to participate in the mixed 4x400 metres relay final.
That occasion, which marks the end of the track business, will be attended by Haron Adoli, Shida Leni, Godfrey Chan wengo, and Maureen Banura.
That group is driven by their national record time of 3:15.26, which they achieved when they participated in the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, back in May. Adoli and Leni took part in their individual 400-meter finals last night.
