Desperate Fight for Life: 11-Year-Old David Confronts Heart Failure, Kidney Disease, and TB

"I need juice, I need juice," David Paul shouted, nearly yelling due to the pain and suffering caused by the various life-threatening illnesses he has endured for almost two years.
David's exhausted and powerless mother, Blessing Paul, out of worry about surpassing the advised daily limit of 300ml of fluids, hesitantly gave him the leftover juice from a container. The boy drank it quickly and kept shouting for more, unable to lie down, sit, sleep, or eat.
However, his mother refused to grant him that request since he had not been producing sufficient urine to justify providing him with more fluids than what the medical professionals overseeing his condition advised.
The Saturday Tribune was the first to highlight David Paul's situation on July 12, 2025. However, several months later, the condition of the 11-year-old boy, who has been diagnosed with heart failure, kidney disease, and tuberculosis, has deteriorated further, and his family's plea for assistance has grown even more urgent.
Over the last two years, David has frequently moved between various hospitals, beginning with the Model Primary Health Care in Emenike Junction, Mile 1 Diobu, Port Harcourt; the Military Hospital in Port Harcourt; the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital; the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital in Uyo; and a private hospital in Uyo, in search of treatment for his health issues.
Nevertheless, the primary care and treatment are provided at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, previously known as Braithwaite Memorial Hospital (BMH), which maintains all his medical records.
As per Daniel Paul, the boy's father, the child has been diagnosed with heart failure, tuberculosis, and kidney disease. A specialist mentioned that although kidney problems can be more effectively managed within the country, they are unsure if treatment is possible outside of it.
Over the past two years, David's situation has been a sensitive matter, as described by his mother, who has completely left her small-scale trading business to care for her son.
It was just one morning, a year and 11 months ago, when he woke up and began vomiting something that looked like blood but was black. I took him to the clinic, where they administered an injection and put him on antibiotics for three days. After that, I noticed his face had become swollen. They suggested it was a food allergy and advised me to conduct some tests, which I did, but the issue persisted.
His legs began to swell. I returned to the health centre, and they referred us to BMH (Rivers State University Teaching Hospital), but we went to the Military Hospital instead. There, he was admitted for nearly three weeks and then sent back to BMH. They admitted him again, and BMH has been taking care of him since. Later, his stomach became swollen, and he experienced paralysis and temporary blindness.
"They were later diagnosed with a partial stroke. Once he stabilized, we were released. However, we returned to BMH almost every month. They then stated he was experiencing heart failure, and due to his prolonged hospital stay, he developed tuberculosis, which created additional challenges on top of the existing issues. Next month will mark six months since he last went to the hospital because we ran out of money. They discharged us in July, and since August, we haven't returned.
Now we need around N500,000 because that's the amount needed each month to remove the water from his system. They will drain the fluid, perform heart imaging, X-rays, and all other necessary procedures.
Even in his current state, once we arrive there, they will put him on oxygen. He has appeared helpless, crying, without food or sleep because the water has spread everywhere. I am a trader but I can no longer go to the market due to my son's health. I only go to the market when his brothers return from school or if my sister is home. My husband is a teacher.
She stated, "In addition to visiting the hospital, we have been attending church, praying, and contacting pastors to pray for him. It is God who is sustaining his life."
His father informed the Saturday Tribune that the consultant managing David had recommended a step-by-step approach, beginning with restoring heart function and addressing the tuberculosis prior to exploring a kidney transplant.
The consultant mentioned that we can't discuss a kidney transplant at this moment due to his heart's condition. He explained that once the heart begins to function properly and the kidneys haven't shown improvement, they will then consider the possibility of a transplant.
The heart treatment can be performed in Nigeria, but the consultant mentioned that the kidney condition can only be handled locally. I'm unsure if flying him abroad would completely cure him.
"By June of this year, prior to his TB diagnosis, the consultant estimated the cost of kidney and heart treatments to be approximately between N19 million and N30 million," he said.
The family is appealing to the government, various departments and agencies, non-profit organizations, donors, and members of the public to assist them in saving young David and provide him with an opportunity to lead a complete and satisfying life.
