FDC's Nandala Urges Teso to Protect Oil, Slams Government Corruption

Key Information:
- Nandala claims Museveni is squandering public resources, and calls on the people of Teso to protect the oil.
The presidential candidate from the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Nathan Nandala Mafabi, has called on residents in the Teso Sub-region to safeguard recently disclosed crude oil reserves, criticizing the government for shortcomings in transparency, fairness, and the handling of natural resources.
"It was verified that there is oil present in Teso. No one will take your oil when we gain control," Nandala stated during campaign gatherings on November 21 in Ogom, Kadami, and Nyero sub-counties within the Kumi District.
In 2021, the government hired Xcalibar, a Spanish firm, to carry out mineral exploration in the regions of Teso, Karamoja, and Lamwo.
Their results are thought to have influenced the Ministry of Energy's declaration regarding oil reserves in Teso.
As per the Uganda Investment Authority, on November 15, 2024, the ministry announced three new oil and gas exploration zones spanning 2,244 square miles: the Moroto–Kadam Basin in northeastern Uganda, the Lake Kyoga Basin in central Uganda, and the Hoima Basin in midwestern Uganda.
UIA mentioned that prospective basins cover 26 districts, which are set to be available for exploration.
Nandala informed his followers that Uganda's main issues were "Greed, Injustice, and Corruption, among other problems," attributing the failure to combat corruption during his almost four-decade rule to President Museveni.
"To verify that they are now stealing on a daily basis, they are squandering millions of dollars promoting a man who has been president throughout this entire period through printed posters, banners, and billboards," he stated before next year's General Election.
The FDC candidate claimed the government was responsible for worsening conditions in communities by "destroying" cotton, which had previously been a significant cash crop in Teso.
"Ugandans have been turned into beggars in their own country by destroying your cotton, which once made you a proud people. Our cotton is the finest and most expensive in the entire world," he said.
He vowed to rejuvenate ginneries and bring back cotton manufacturing.
"We intend to bring back cotton here and restore our ginneries. This cotton is a cash crop, which means it generates money. Now that it has been destroyed, you no longer have income. That is why you have turned into beggars," Nandala said to the crowd.
He also criticized the government for not providing compensation to Teso people for their cattle lost during periods of conflict, even though court decisions mandated payment.
"I would like to ask, if justice exists in Uganda, why haven't they followed the court decision that states you should be compensated for the cows you lost? I'm telling you, these people won't provide you with compensation. If he is genuine, why can't he offer you the money now," he said.
Nandala called on voters to "avoid falsehoods," and choose leaders who would "arrive and struggle for the people's rights."
