Flood Death Toll Reaches 43 in Central Vietnam, $114M in Economic Damage Estimated
The severe floods affecting central Vietnam have worsened, with the number of fatalities reaching 43 and nine more people still unaccounted for.
The Department of Dyke Management and Flood and Storm Control, part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, verified the number of casualties on Friday. This figure has risen by two from Thursday's update, with the total comprising 16 in Dak Lak, 14 in Khanh Hoa, five in Gia Lai, four in Lam Dong, and two each in Thua Thien Hue and Da Nang.
The water levels have surged quickly, causing total destruction to 168 homes and flooding more than 67,700 others. Dak Lak suffered the most with 40,000 houses flooded, followed by Gia Lai with 19,000 and Khanh Hoa with 9,000.
Officials have put initial economic losses at VND3 trillion (US$113.76 million), although detailed regional figures are still pending.
The farming industry has experienced major damages, as the floods have destroyed more than 13,000 hectares of rice, flowers, and vegetables, over 2,000 hectares of additional crops, almost 31,000 animals and poultry, and 88 hectares of fish farming. Facilities have also been greatly affected.
Several critical National Highways, such as 1, 14, 14E, 14H, 40B, 20, and Truong Son Dong, have 30 sites affected by flooding and landslides, causing significant traffic jams.
More than 140 provincial and inter-commune roads are also impacted, along with 14 passenger rail services on Wednesday and Thursday. Furthermore, Tuy Hoa Airport in Phu Yen province had to stop functioning for 14 hours on Thursday. Electricity blackouts reached more than one million customers, although about 615,000 have now regained power.
Gia Lai has closed all schools from Wednesday, while Khanh Hoa has halted classes at 796 schools, affecting approximately 447,840 students. Officials have focused on ensuring safety, successfully moving and relocating 21,700 families, amounting to almost 72,000 individuals, from regions vulnerable to landslides and additional flooding.
Aid response
The Defense Department has sent 21,300 individuals and 838 vehicles to support the population, using four military planes to transport nine tons of food and necessary supplies to remote areas. The Ministry of Public Security has sent almost 42,000 officers, local units, and 3,200 vehicles to the regions affected by flooding.
The Ministry of Finance distributed emergency national rice stocks, providing 2,000 tons to both Khanh Hoa and Gia Lai. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh approved VND50 billion in urgent assistance for Khanh Hoa on Tuesday, after allocating VND300 billion to Gia Lai and VND200 billion to Dak Lak the week before.
In addition to direct support, the Department of Dyke Management and Flood and Storm Control requested non-monetary help, asking for goods such as sausages, biscuits, bottled water, and milk, which are valued at approximately VND2.5 billion.
International assistance is also being sent to the impacted regions. UNICEF and the International Organization for Migration contributed $20,000 each to buy bottled water for people living in Gia Lai and Dak Lak.
A delivery of assistance from the European Union, consisting of 138 kitchen kits and 150 family tents worth roughly 75,660 euros ($87,310), is set to be handed out in Dak Lak on Saturday.
Numerous volunteer organizations from various regions across Vietnam have also provided boats, provisions, and essential items to support those affected by the floods.
