The leadership of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has stated that four individuals have been found guilty of participating in the destruction of the company's assets in Ebonyi State.

The head of the Group, Corporate Communications, EEDC, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, revealed this in a statement on Thursday.

As stated by Ezeh, one of the prisoners, Chukwuma Onwe received a four-year prison sentence on 12 November 2025 from Hon. Justice John Igboji at the High Court of Ebonyi State in Nigeria, specifically at the Ohaukwu Judicial Division located in Ezzangbo. His conviction stemmed from a three-count accusation involving conspiracy, destruction, and illegal cutting of transformer armored cables, as well as theft, in violation of the Ebonyi State Criminal Code, Cap 33, which is part of the Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria from 2009.

Regarding the conspiracy charge, Onwe was given a three-year sentence, whereas the charges of vandalism and theft each carried four years. All sentences will be served at the same time.

Ezeh mentioned that he was detained by the police in September 2023 for damaging a transformer owned by EEDC in Ntsulakpa, Ezzangbo Community, located in Ebonyi State.

As a parallel case, on 7 November 2025, the same court handed down four-year prison sentences to Okefe Stanley, Aleke Kingsley, and Egba Friday for acts including vandalism, illegal disconnection, and the destruction and removal of aluminum conductors from EEDC.

The group received a three-year sentence for conspiracy and an additional four years each for damage and theft, with all sentences served at the same time.

Ezeh stated that they were detained on June 5, 2023, by the local vigilante group from Oshituma Community within the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The EEDC leadership praised the judiciary for its rulings and called for the swift processing of other ongoing cases involving vandalism.

"We are satisfied with these rulings and trust that they will act as a warning to those involved in such illegal activities," Ezeh said.

Several months ago, specifically in August, four individuals — Ikechukwu Esseh, Ikedinachi Uche, Ukpai Godwin, and Uchenna Kalu — received a seven-year prison sentence from Hon. Justice Nicholas E. Nwode in Ebonyi State for damaging a 7.5MVA Injection Substation owned by EEDC located on Education Board Road in Afikpo, within the Afikpo North Local Government Area.

EEDC thanked the Nigerian Police and the Ohaukwu Community's vigilante group for their alertness and strong dedication to fighting this issue, mentioning that this matches the company's ongoing appeal for community cooperation in protecting essential power infrastructure.

Ezeh expressed concern over the adverse effects of vandalism on the company's activities, emphasizing that EEDC has kept allocating limited resources to repair vandalized or damaged equipment—money that might have been used to improve service provision.

He called on customers to stay alert and protect electrical facilities in their areas, cautioning that acts of damage inevitably lead to power outages and trouble.
