Teachers who received a 7.5 percent salary increase are set to have a four-day workweek in the classroom, according toSNPintentions to prevent walkouts.
Union leaders have warned of causing disorder in schools through strike actions, aiming to reduce the time they spend with students.
Currently, Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth has introduced plans for a 'flexible' four-day workweek.
The other weekday—potentially managed by temporary staff and schedule adjustments—would involve activities like grading students' assignments or engaging in career advancement.
But Scottish ToryEducation spokesperson Miles Briggs has called the plan a 'gimmick.' He stated, 'The SNP has seriously failed to supply the additional teachers they pledged, making it impractical to actually achieve the reduced teaching hours for educators.'
Just this week, we received confirmation that frustration with our schools has reached an all-time high, yet Jenny Gilruth is still not addressingtackle deteriorating standards and the surge in classroom violence that her party's policies have led to.
This trick will only cheat students without offering any genuine assistance to teachers.
Sharing the details, Ms. Gilruth mentioned that the plan involves a 'step-by-step reduction in contact time, with various alternatives being considered.' These options involve modifications to the workweek, including a 'flexible four-day teaching schedule that might provide a specific day for professional development.'
There would also be a "move toward minimum standards for student learning hours, which could allow for later start times, longer breaks, or redesigned school schedules."
Ms. Gilruth proposed that the school day might begin later to accommodate students whofind it hard to rise early in the morningShe stated: "These suggestions represent a commitment to enable Scotland's educators with the time, confidence, and resources required to provide impactful education."
The proposals will be reviewed by the Scottish Negotiating Committee for Teachers (SNCT), which includes representatives from teaching unions, local councils, and the government. In its 2021 Holyrood manifesto, the SNP committed to decreasing classroom contact time from 22.5 hours to 21 hours.
Nevertheless, it has not fulfilled its commitment, and earlier this month, Scotland's biggest teachers' union – the EIS – called on its members to support strike action regarding this matter.
A strike vote was revealed on the same day teachers received a 7.5 percent salary increase over two years. Andrea Bradley, general secretary of EIS, stated: 'We will wait for more information about these suggestions through the SNCT.'
Until further notice, the EIS vote is still active due to the inability to provide the promised 1.5-hour decrease in the maximum teaching hours for all educators as a way to ease their workload.
The EIS calls on all educators to participate in this vote and support the strike by voting yes.
