HIV Cases Surge to 36,000 in Liberia Amid Funding Warnings
Liberia has reported around 36,000 HIV cases, rising from 34,000 in the previous year, as per the latest UNAIDS Spectrum 2025 data published on Thursday by the National AIDS Commission (NAC). The revised numbers, revealed ahead of National AIDS Day on December 1, indicate that women still bear the highest impact of the virus across the country.
The chair of the NAC, Dr. Cecelia Nuta, mentioned that the data reflects both "advancement and worry," highlighting that although there has been an increase in testing and treatment access, new infections are on the rise and underlying weaknesses persist.
Based on the UNAIDS Spectrum 2025 projections, Liberia currently has 36,000 individuals living with HIV, reflecting a prevalence rate of 0.9 percent," said Dr. Nuta during the unveiling of World AIDS Day initiatives. "Although we acknowledge the progress made, we need to address the fact that women continue to be significantly impacted, and the increase from 34,000 to 36,000 highlights the necessity for broader prevention and care services.
Advancements in Testing and Therapy -- However, Dangers Increasing
The Commission stated that 31,000 out of the approximately 36,000 individuals living with HIV are aware of their condition, marking a major progress in managing the epidemic. Out of these, 30,798 are receiving treatment, and 95 percent of those undergoing therapy have achieved viral suppression, indicating they are much less likely to spread the virus.
Nevertheless, the NAC cautioned that development is still vulnerable. Dr. Nuta pointed out the recent temporary suspension of U.S. foreign assistance, a major financial support for Liberia's HIV initiatives, which affected outreach efforts, testing, and community assistance services.
The temporary pause in external aid highlighted how fragile our country's HIV program is when it depends greatly on outside help," she stated. "A more robust national financial dedication is crucial to safeguard the progress we have achieved.
Demand for Higher Government Financial Support
The NAC called on the Liberian government to greatly increase its HIV funding for the 2025/2026 financial year, emphasizing that the national effort "cannot continue without local responsibility." The Commission also praised President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for his ongoing support and guidance despite financial challenges.
Medical staff, the Ministry of Health, and the National AIDS & STI Control Program received recognition for maintaining availability of treatment and testing services amid financial challenges.
National Initiative Launches on November 24
Before National AIDS Day, the NAC will initiate a broad media awareness campaign running from November 24 to December 1 in Montserrado, Grand Bassa, Margibi, Bomi, Bong, and Lofa counties. Events will feature radio and television appearances, discussions with young people, and initiatives in schools, markets, churches, mosques, and other public areas.
The celebration will culminate on December 1 with a large parade in downtown Monrovia, concluding at the Capitol Building Grounds, where President Boakai is anticipated to deliver the main address. Free HIV testing, distribution of condoms, and educational sessions will also be offered.
As Liberia moves closer to achieving the global 2030 target of eliminating AIDS as a public health issue, the NAC has pledged enhanced collaboration and responsibility.
The data shows that progress is genuine, yet the obstacles remain equally apparent," the Commission stated. "We need to take action immediately to preserve our achievements and ensure the health and welfare of every Liberian.
