Honoring a Visionary Strategist at 80

...His steps are remarkable. His path, filled with tales. The tale of his life like a big-screen film! The extraordinary Chief Bode George.

Once more, the rhythms of fate echo, calling us to pay tribute to a man who has traversed storms and victories, the man of all eras…

Born in 1945 within the rich history of Lagos Island, Chief Olabode Ibiyinka George became a man known for his discipline, strength, and honesty. He was trained as a sailor and felt called to strategy, with his direction always aimed at service and responsibility.

Therefore, in the Nigerian Navy, he found his rhythm — that holy intersection where bravery meets discipline, and dignity coincides with determination. There, he stood out among men of strength and spirit, navigating the waves of national service with a firm grip and an unbreakable heart. His remarkable career reached its peak when he became the 9th Military Governor of Ondo State from July 1988 to September 1990. Two years marked by unforgettable accomplishments. Later, he worked as the Principal Staff Officer to the then Chief of General Staff; Gen. Oladipo Diya, and shortly after, as Director of the National War College from 1993 to 1997. He retired as a highly decorated Commodore.

But fate soon summoned him away from the decks, into the wide and frequently stormy sea of governance and politics — a world where storms rage more fiercely than any ocean's fury. Yet, even in this new domain, he remained steadfast: still a leader, but now of people and ideas. Chief George served with unyielding loyalty — to his country, to his citizens, and to the principles of public service. As a party leader and tactician, he initially held the position of PDP National Vice-Chairman (SW) and eventually became National Deputy Chairman. During his time as Vice-Chairman, SW, he secured an unprecedented five out of six states across the entire Yorubaland for the PDP.

To this day, he continues to be a prominent figure and guiding force within the People’s Democratic Party.

The journey to achieve greatness is always accompanied by challenges. When darkness surrounded him and malicious words were spoken, when opponents sought to ruin his reputation, he carried his burden with the peace of belief and the grace of someone who knows that difficulties strengthen rather than break. BGee's unfair imprisonment was ultimately reversed and canceled by the highest court in the country—the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Like steel refined in flames, he came out cleaner and more powerful. For truth, he has demonstrated, is enduring — and time is the most just evaluator. The years have proven that what jealousy once tried to defame was correct. His hands are without deceit, and his heart keeps beating in harmony with service, without any resentment.

As a distinguished gentleman and officer, his greatest strength lies in the solid foundation of a tightly-knit family he has established with his beloved wife, who has been by his side for many decades; Dr. Mrs. Roli Bode George; former DG of NDLEA. Our matriarch. A woman of elegance, charm, and moral integrity.

Now, at eighty, the sailor stands on the shore of his legacy, reflecting not with regret, but with appreciation. The storms did not destroy him; they molded him. The waves did not submerge him; they carried him upward.

Today, I, Hon. Dare Adeleke, representing all your mentees and dedicated followers, join numerous individuals of good will, spread throughout Nigeria and across the globe, in celebrating not just the number of your years, but the richness of your mission. We honor a man of bravery, strong beliefs, and kindness — a leader in politics, a guide to many, and an emblem of Lagos' strength and the unstoppable Nigerian character.

May the wave of divine favor keep supporting your journey, Chief Olabode Ibiyinka George — a leader, a father, and a true patriot. May we all come together once more to honor you at 90, and again at 100, in good health and with a strong spirit.

May your later years be filled with tranquility and satisfaction, as history records your name among the loyal few who cherished their country, served faithfully, and endured everything — unbroken.

Hon. Dare Adeleke writes from Oja'ba, Ibadan
