Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierreproclaimed herself 'independent' and authored a full book on the subject.
But she missed one crucial step in departing from itDemocratic Party.
Although she had doubts about her party since July last year, she only updated her voter registration right before the book's release — and there is currently no documentation of this change available.
A voter profile report acquired from theMarylandState Election Board according to the Daily Mail, Jean-Pierre's registration is marked as 'active,' and her political affiliation is listed as 'Democratic.'
The document, prepared on October 27, 2025, mentioned that Jean-Pierre cast a provisional vote in the general election.election last year.
A person with knowledge of the matter revealed to the Daily Mail that the former press secretary updated her registration via mail, allowing her to accurately state she had no party preference, and she did this in late September or early October of this year.
Her publication came out on October 21.
The source also mentioned that there were no significant elections in Maryland this year.
Jean-Pierre registered in the state in 2014 and has remained an active voter ever since.
She even made the effort to cast her vote in Maryland's May 2024 Democratic primary, when her boss, President Joe Biden, was virtually certain to win, as Representative Dean Phillips, who was listed on the Maryland ballot, had already withdrawn from the race, and the president was only facing self-help author Marianne Williamson.
Jean-Pierre wrote in Independent: A Glimpse into a Failing White House, Beyond Political Boundariesthat she began considering leaving the Democratic Party following Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race in July 2024.
You know what? I'm going to become independent," Jean-Pierre wrote about what she told a friend during a trip to New York in the days after Biden stepped down on July 21. "I don't think I can handle being part of the Democratic Party anymore.
In her book, Jean-Pierre extensively discussed what she saw as a coup against Biden, criticizing the Democratic leadership for forsaking and betraying a leader who guided the nation through the COVID-19 crisis due to a poor debate performance.
My friend was astonished," she wrote. "He halted in his place, abandoning whatever activity he was engaged in, and started asking me a series of questions. What did that really mean? How would my coworkers respond?
She held onto that idea tightly as the Democrats united behind Vice President Kamala Harris's bid for the nomination.
"And for several months, my ideas of becoming independent faded, pushed aside by a temporary enthusiasm for the future," she wrote.
Jean-Pierre became disheartened once more after the Democratic Party failed to secure Harris's election.
"Yet it failed to assist a pioneering, highly successful former prosecutor, who aimed to elevate all members of our society, in defeating Trump, a habitual liar and convicted criminal who openly supported a politics of cruelty," she wrote.
She mentioned that the party failed to connect with the millions of Americans who did not vote, and was unable to effectively communicate the accomplishments of the Biden/Harris administration to help Harris win and enter the White House.
At the start of her book, which was revealed in June 2025, she mentioned that she had stopped being a 'party insider' after two decades.
I can fight more fiercely for my country from outside the Democratic Party than from inside it," she stated. "From now on, I am politically an independent.
