Major Fire Disrupts US Car Manufacturing ... and Threatens America's Beloved Truck

A significant fire swept through a large metal manufacturing facility in upstate New York — potentially leading to massive financial losses for automaker Ford.

On Thursday, Novelis, the world's leading aluminum recycler and a key provider to American car manufacturers, announced that its 1.5-million-square-foot Oswego plant caught fire. The company did not disclose the cause of the fire.

Firefighters arrived just before 9 a.m. following the emergence of thick smoke and flames in the plant's hot-rolling section, where heated slabs are transformed into long sheets intended for car manufacturers.

Over 80 firefighters from 20 different fire stations worked for almost nine hours to combat the severe fire, employing tanker trucks and several ladder trucks to extinguish the roof area.

Over 1,100 employees at the location were securely moved out, as reported by local authorities.

"We understand the circumstances and are collaborating with Novelis to gain further insight," said a Ford representative on Friday morning.

The fire marks the second major fire at the facility since Septemberand another setback for Ford's already-struggling truck manufacturing.

The plant plays a crucial role in Ford's most lucrative car — and the top-selling vehicle in America — the F-150.

Ten years ago, Ford made a significant investment in lighter, more fuel-efficient body panels for its trucks — and Novelis emerged as its main collaborator in manufacturing them.

Novelis provided the primary source of lightweight aluminum.

When the section of the plant responsible for heating and forming metal caught fire in September, it disrupted the supply of those sheets and compelled Ford to reduce F-150 production.

At that time, Ford approximated theThe disruption would result in costs ranging from $1 billion to $2 billion..

The September disruption had already led to temporary closures at automobile factories in Tennessee and Michigan.

In October, Novelis informed the Daily Mail that it anticipated the facility would be up and running by December, surpassing certain analyst predictions which suggested it would not be ready until March 2026.

By midday on Friday, the metal manufacturer stated to the Daily Mail that certain sections of the facility had 'resumed operations.'

'Novelis will keep using alternative resources, such as its worldwide network of facilities and industry partners, to reduce effects,' Novelis stated.

Ford's shares fell by over two percent on Thursday. They rebounded by one percent during early Friday trading.

Novelis had been engaged in a non-stop repair operation for the past two months, including the use of stadium lights to enable workers to continue their tasks during the night.

Approximately three weeks following the September fire, Ford stated to the Daily Mail that "they have been collaborating closely with Novelis, and a complete team is focused on handling the issue while examining all available options to reduce any possible interruptions."

Aluminum production is emerging as a central issue in the car pricing dilemma. In March, President Donald Trumpimposed a 25 percent tax on all aluminum produced outside the country.

He increased the tariff to 50 percent in May, further raising the cost for businesses seeking new aluminum suppliers.

Novelis has multiple facilities across the globe, but the Oswego facility is the biggest in North America.
