Fátima Bosch Fernández from Mexico was named Miss Universe 2025 on Friday, marking a thrilling win for a 25-year-old who became the focal point of the intense 74th edition of the renowned beauty contest in Bangkok, where she faced public harassment from one of the hosts.
The problems at this year's gathering originated from a harsh reprimand directed at Bosch, leading to a dispute that included a protest, feminist support, and a tearful, over-the-top apology from the local organizer who triggered it all.
As Bosch was declared the victor, cheers and shouts filled the air, with Mexican flags being waved by delighted fans.
After winning, Bosch told the media that she hopes to be seen as "someone who slightly altered the standard of what a Miss Universe represents and a genuine individual who offers sincerity."
She also honored the competition, calling it "a stage that is powerful because it provides women with the opportunity to express themselves."
The runner-up was Praveenar Singh from Thailand, who is 29 years old, and Stephany Adriana Abasali Nasser from Venezuela, aged 25, who finished in third place. Completing the rankings were Ahtisa Manalo, 28, from the Philippines, and Olivia Yacé, 27, from Ivory Coast, who secured fifth position.
During the live-streamed sash ceremony for over 100 participants on November 4, Thai national director Nawat Itsaragrisil criticized Bosch for supposedly not adhering to the rules for engaging in local promotional events. He summoned security when she tried to speak in her defense.
Bosch exited the room, accompanied by several others demonstrating support, including Miss Universe 2024, Victoria Kjær Theilvig from Denmark.

Nawat maintained that he did not refer to her as "dumb."
The president of the Miss Universe Organization, Mexican entrepreneur Raúl Rocha Cantú, issued a statement criticizing Nawat's behavior as "public aggression" and "serious misconduct."
Even Mexico's first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, added her voice, stating at a press conference in the nation's capital that she wished to "acknowledge" Miss Mexico for expressing her dissent in a "respectful" manner.
"It appears to me that this is an example of how women should speak out," Sheinbaum stated.
Sheinbaum remembered being told in the past that "women appear more attractive when they remain silent."
"Women appear more beautiful when we speak up and get involved, as this relates to the acknowledgment of our rights," she stated.
Nawat later expressed regret for his behavior, showing a mix of sadness and resistance simultaneously.
If anyone was affected and felt uncomfortable about what happened, I am truly sorry," he said in front of the contestants. He then looked at them and asked, "It's over now. Okay? Are you happy?
According to the official Miss Universe profile of Bosch, she pursued studies in fashion in Mexico and Italy, and has dedicated herself to developing eco-friendly designs using recycled materials. The biography mentions her involvement in working with underprivileged children, raising awareness about environmental issues, and supporting migrants as well as addressing mental health concerns.
This year's competition also included a report stating that two judges had resigned, with one indicating that there was some form of manipulation in the contest. The claim was refuted. In addition, Thai authorities looked into the suspected illegal promotion of online casinos as part of the event's marketing efforts.
Incidents and disputes are common for the pageant. The 2021 competition faced backlash as it took place in Israel, disappointing advocates for the Palestinian community.
A small mistake — literally — took place on Wednesday when Miss Universe Jamaica, Gabrielle Henry, slipped off the stage during the evening gown segment. She did not suffer serious injuries.
