Mystery Object Shatters United Flight Windshield at 36,000 Feet Revealed

A probe into the mysterious object that broke the window of a United Airlines aircraft has revealed that the cause was a weather balloon.

The crash on October 18 compelled the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to perform an emergency landing whilenear Moab, Utah.

WindBorne Systems had previously stated that it believed one of its weather balloons hit and damaged the windshield of United Flight 1093 while it was flying at approximately 36,000 feet.

Now, the National Transportation Safety Board has validated the company's concerns and stated that the trajectory of the WindBorne long-duration, high-altitude weather balloon aligned with that of the United Airlines jet.

The balloon had left Spokane, Washington, the day before, flying overOregon and Nevada, eventually entering the airspace above Utah.

The effect caused both pilots to be covered in fragments of glass.

The The captain suffered several minor cuts on his right arm., the NTSB stated. The first officer remained unharmed.

The commander stated he observed a far-off object on the horizon but didn't get a chance to inform his colleague before there was a major collision with the windshield and a loud noise.

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy stated last month that the incident "could have been extremely harmful to the plane and its passengers."

There were early worries that the damage might have resulted from space debris.

Previous governmental research has indicated a minimal chance of debris hitting aircraft while they are in the air.

Aircraft windshields consist of multiple layers to avoid a decrease in cabin pressure if they get damaged during flight.

The NTSB stated that the flight took off from Denver carrying 112 passengers and crew.

The commander announced a crisis and safely redirected to Salt Lake City.

Travelers were moved to Los Angeles on a different plane later that day.

WindBorne has stated that it has carried out over 4,000 launches and submits a report to the Federal Aviation Administration for each one.

In an interview with Ars Technica, Kai Marshland, co-founder of WindBorne, stated: "I believe this was a WindBorne balloon. We became aware of UA1093 and the possibility that it was connected to one of our balloons at 11 pm PT on Sunday, and we promptly investigated."

At 6:00 AM Pacific Time, we submitted our initial inquiry to both the NTSB and FAA, and are collaborating with both organizations to conduct a more detailed investigation.

The company stated that they have implemented 'urgent' modifications to 'reduce' the duration their balloons remain between 30,000 and 40,000 feet.

WindBorne has introduced four extra safety protocols to better minimize the chances of any future collisions between aircraft and balloons, as well as lessen damage if such an incident happens again, it stated.

The company also mentioned that it has reduced the time spent in primary commercial altitude zones by about 50% throughout its fleet and is sending automated email updates every two hours for all balloons in specific regions.
