Nine's Star Steps Up as Next NSW Liberal Leader
- Elected unanimously by colleagues
- Will take the NSW Liberals to the 2027 election
A rookie MP has emerged as the newest leader of the Liberals following the departure of the ailingNSWparty seeks to strengthen its position 18 months before a key eventelection.
Former Nine TV host Kellie Sloane rose quickly to the peak of the NSW Liberals on Friday, following the turbulent consequences of the federal Liberals' election defeat, which damaged its state reputation and led to demands for new leadership.
Her predecessor, Mark Speakman, eventually succumbed to the pressure on Thursday, announcing his resignation and endorsing fellow moderate Ms. Sloane.
She was chosen without any opposition during a party meeting on Friday morning.
Conservative candidate and Shadow Attorney-General Alister Henskens withdrew earlier.
Previous cabinet member Natalie Ward maintained the second-in-command position.
Ms. Sloane, who is the mother of three children, had a long-standing career in journalism and news broadcasting before collaborating with Healthy Harold to head the non-profit Life Education NSW.
Having lost the pre-selection for the former Premier Gladys Berejiklian's Willoughby seat in 2022, Ms. Sloane was comfortably elected as the MP for the eastern Sydney electorate of Vaucluse during the 2023 state election, and was quickly placed on the opposition frontbench under Mr. Speakman.

Even as late as Thursday morning, Mr. Speakman remained committed to keeping his title, initiating a media campaign in which he minimized rumors of a leak.
However, when Ms. Sloane—a friend and member of the moderate faction—announced her decision to take the lead, he chose to withdraw.
Ms. Sloane, aged 52, is the second woman this week to replace a male state Liberal leader, following Victoria's coalition opposition who removed Brad Battin in favor of first-term MP Jess Wilson.
Although both women aim to improve their situations ahead of the upcoming state elections, Ms. Sloane has a difficult challenge ahead.
No opposition party has secured a victory in an election in New South Wales or at the federal level since the 1930s, and current surveys indicate that the coalition would lose more seats to Labor if an election were held immediately.
"They're in a very tough situation right now," election analyst Ben Raue said to AAP.
It's a straightforward mechanical adjustment to dismiss an individual and hire another, but unless this is the exact cause of your unpopularity, it won't bring about any real change.
Ms. Sloane will lead the coalition alongside new Nationals leader Gurmesh Singh, who was chosen without opposition on Tuesday following Dugald Saunders' unexpected resignation.
The following NSW election will take place in March 2027.
