Key information to be aware of:
- Investigations by authorities grow more rigorous following an armed robbery targeting residences in Busia.
Fighters armed with pangas attacked two houses in the Busia District on Thursday evening, focusing on an opposition parliamentary candidate and a school principal, according to locals, who describe this as the most recent surge in violent thefts in Dabani Sub-county.
The attackers initially targeted the residence of Kennedy Wanyama, the National Unity Platform (NUP) party's parliamentary candidate for Busia Municipality, in Buwuma A village just after midnight.
Wanyama stated that the thieves utilized axes and machetes to break through his doors following the deactivation of security systems.
He told Monitorthat the group cut off power from a nearby pole, disabling his CCTV cameras, then climbed over his boundary wall.
Upon entering the premises, they tore open the front door, stepped into his living area, and subsequently broke into his bedroom.
The perpetrators fled with over Shs5 million along with his mobile phones.
"The attackers, who had concealed their faces, instructed us to hand over all valuable items, including money, or else they would kill us," Wanyama stated.
He mentioned that the group cautioned him to "stay out of politics," fueling worries that the attack could have been politically driven.
From Buwuma A, the criminals proceeded to Sibarara Village, where they attacked the house of Mr. Deogratius Mugeni, the principal of Buhobe SS. Mugeni informed NTV Uganda that he heard a loud noise at his gate before spotting torchlight as the gang broke into his doors.
He stated that the thieves took four mobile phones and an unknown amount of money from his residence.
"They continued yelling in Kiswahili, threatening to kill, but left the house after neighbors began throwing stones and creating a commotion," Mugeni said. Police arrived shortly after but were unable to locate the suspects.
Following the attacks, law enforcement officers utilized a dog unit that followed a scent from Wanyama's house to the home of Patrick Okumu, a brickmaker in Buwuma A.
Tony Ajute, the police dog handler, informed people assembled outside the house that "the dog has followed the scent of the suspects from the home of one of the victims all the way here."
Nevertheless, Okumu was not present at that moment. His father, Raphael Barasa, rejected any claim regarding his son's participation.
"My son has no criminal history; he makes a living by producing bricks. It surprises me that the police dog is tracking suspects to his doorstep," Barasa said.
Local chairperson Yesse Opio also supported Okumu, but mentioned that this was the second time this month that individuals with panga weapons have assaulted the village.
With ongoing inquiries, locals report that the sense of safety is deteriorating.
Iddi Muhmad Kibaki cautioned the community to stay vigilant.
"Since the holiday season is coming up, we recommend our citizens to be more cautious as we are expected to see an increase," Kibaki stated.
