Nzimande Calls for Unity in Africa's Vaccine Drive

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, has highlighted the significance of collaborative efforts in enhancing Africa's ability to develop critical vaccines and medications.

The Minister addressed the Strategic Dialogue on Vaccine Local Production on Wednesday, an event that drew prominent figures from across the globe at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg.

The conversation was a component of the strategic collaboration among the Biovac Institute (Biovac), the World Health Organisation (WHO), GIZ's Sustainable African Vaccine Manufacturing (SAVax) Program, and Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, within the Team Europe Manufacturing Africa Vaccine Plus Initiative (MAV+).

Political officials, global allies, oversight bodies, and business representatives concentrated on the urgent matter of vaccine manufacturing within South Africa.

Nzimande stated, 'The COVID-19 crisis has demonstrated that long-term health security relies on regional self-reliance, creativity, and strength.'

As a nation, the Minister stated that the government acknowledges that certain challenges confronting humanity today can only be addressed through cooperation, especially the sharing of scientific knowledge.

Because of this, we appreciate the partnership with Gavi and are confident that their attendance today highlights our joint dedication to creating a strong, inclusive, and self-reliant vaccine system in Africa.

He emphasized the strategic collaboration through the Team Europe Initiative, which is vital in promoting sustainable vaccine production throughout the region.

The Minister also expressed his gratitude to the WHO for their guidance in technology transfer, regulatory enhancement, and international collaboration, and acknowledged GIZ for its continuous technical support.

"Their efforts enhance skills, quality systems, and technological development capacities within our research and production facilities," Nzimande stated, emphasizing the significance of cooperative innovation.

Exploring the progress South Africa has achieved, the Minister highlighted important achievements that will influence the nation's vaccine scenario.

The creation of Biovac as a public-private collaboration has emerged as a fundamental element of our vaccine production sector.

In the meantime, he highlighted that the mRNA Vaccine Technology Transfer Hub, organized by the WHO and backed by the European Union, was especially significant.

"This marks the development of next-generation vaccine Research and Development (R&D) capabilities in Africa," he further noted, emphasizing the dedication to enhancing understanding and skills.

Nzimande also made a point of emphasizing his focus on the challenges that remain ahead.

"Local producers encounter restricted market access and unpredictable demand, which weakens investment confidence," he stated.

He proposed the necessity of a unified strategy for regulatory systems throughout the continent and acknowledged that the presence of disjointed regulatory structures raises expenses and delays product launches.

The Minister informed the delegates that South Africa is ready to take the lead in a continental effort aimed at achieving health security and resilience.

Efforts to establish a long-term vaccine production system emphasize research, technological advancement, training, and proper oversight.

"These efforts, when combined, are establishing a base for a long-term vaccine production system that covers research, technological advancement, training, proper regulation, manufacturing, and availability in the market," Nzimande stated.
