Olusegun Awolowo, a legal professional, is the grandson of the late leader of the Western Region, Obafemi Awolowo.
Olusegun Awolowo, son of the late Western Region Premier, Obafemi Awolowo, has passed away. He was 62 years old.
The Awolowo family disclosed his passing through a statement released on Thursday.
"Having extremely heavy hearts, we announce the demise of our cherished husband, father, and grandfather—Olusegun Awolowo," the family stated in a message posted by Goldmynetv.
He was the most extraordinary husband, father, and grandfather the world had ever known—reliable, wise, full of endless love, and the unshakable foundation of our family. A deeply loyal servant to Nigeria, he devoted his life to serving his nation with vision, honesty, enthusiasm, and steadfast dedication.
He was a genuine family man, an outstanding friend, a remarkable servant of God, and an exceptionally kind person. He cherished his family. He valued his job. He had a deep love for his nation. And he lived each day with intention, modesty, and a generous heart that influenced everyone who met him.
We are broken by this tragedy, yet deeply thankful for his life, his impact, and the love he gave to each of us. May his kind heart find eternal tranquility.
The family mentioned that they will accept "sympathies at his home" from 2 to 4 p.m. every day.
The family did not reveal the cause of death.
Olusegun Awolowo (27 September 1963 – 20 November 2025)
Olusegun Awolowo Junior, who came into the world on 27 September 1963, is a legal professional from Nigeria, recognized for his role as the Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) between 2013 and 2021.
He is the grandson of Obafemi Awolowo, a well-known nationalist and leader. In July 2021, he was unanimously chosen as President of the National Trade Promotion Organizations (TPOs) representing ECOWAS member nations.
Mr. Awolowo's childhood was shaped by personal tragedy, with his father, Segun Awolowo Sr., passing away in a car crash in 1963, just two months prior to his birth.
He grew up under the guardianship of his aunt, Tola Oyediran, and her husband, Kayode Oyediran, although he originally resided with his mother and brothers and sisters.
He started his schooling at Mayhill Convent School, where he studied with Dolapo Osinbajo. For his secondary education, Mr Awolowo enrolled at Igbobi College in Lagos and then finished his studies at Government College, Ibadan. Later, he went to Ogun State University (now known as Olabisi Onabanjo University), where he obtained a degree in Law.
Having been admitted to the bar in December 1989, he joined various prominent law firms, such as Abayomi Sogbesan & Co. and G.O.K. Ajayi & Co. Mr Awolowo's career in public service involved positions as a Special Assistant under the administrations of Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, during which he managed traditional institutions, legal issues, and social progress.
In 2013, he took the position of Executive Director/CEO at theNigerian Export Promotion Council,NEPC, a role he continued to hold after being reappointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018. During his tenure, the NEPC launched efforts including a 2019 collaboration with Shoprite to promote Nigerian goods throughout Africa.
As the head of NEPC, he managed various projects designed to increase Nigeria's non-oil exports and enhance the nation's international trade influence.
He remained the President of the National Trade Promotion Organizations (TPOs) representing ECOWAS member countries until his passing.
Ogun Governor mourns
The Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, has conveyed profound sadness following the passing of Mr. Awolowo Jr., referring to him as a distinguished gentleman and a brave public official whose contributions to Nigeria were characterized by honesty and outstanding performance.
In a statement released by himX page, the governor stated that the news of Mr. Awolowo's death was met with profound shock and sorrow, acknowledging that the loss was both public and personal.
The news of Mr. Segun Awolowo Jr.'s death came as a great shock to us, leaving our hearts heavy. For us, this is not merely a loss for the public but a personal one as well. Segun was an outstanding gentleman, smart, kind, and naturally polite. We will always cherish the time we spent with him and the values his life represented. We recall him as a brave public official whose work in Nigeria was characterized by honesty and quality, Governor Abiodun stated.
The governor emphasized Mr. Awolowo's notable career, spanning his initial days in legal work to his tenure under former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, and subsequently his role at the NEPC. He mentioned that Mr. Awolowo's election as President of theECOWASTrade Promotion Organizations highlighted his reliability and expertise.
"Although his journey was short, it left a significant mark. We share in the sorrow of his wife, children, the entire Awolowo family, and all Nigerians grieving this tremendous loss. We accept God's will and pray that his kind soul is at peace," Governor Abiodun said.
