PDP Condemns Tinubu's Cancellation of South Africa and Angola Trips
The People's Democratic Party has criticized President Bola Tinubu's choice to abandon his scheduled visits to South Africa and Angola.
The party characterized Tinubu's move as superficial rather than a true expression of worry regarding the recent turmoil in northern Nigeria.
The PDP claimed that the cancellation appears more like a symbolic act following the kidnapping of 25 schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, rather than a genuine effort to tackle insecurity.
In a statement released on Thursday, the party's National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, called on Nigerians to not interpret the president's change in plans as genuine empathy.
The declaration by President Bola Tinubu to cancel his scheduled visits to South Africa and Angola represents the most recent and prominent instance of symbolic gestures.
Although the decision might seem to align with the abduction of the Maga schoolgirls and the growing instability throughout the country, especially in northern Nigeria, it is simply a superficial act and nothing more.
If the Presidency led by the All Progressives Congress opposes this stance, we call on President Tinubu to temporarily move to Kebbi State and other areas experiencing armed conflict in Northern Nigeria. This action would not only urge the security forces to take more determined steps in halting the current violence but would also enhance the spirits of the soldiers at the front lines.
"As President and Commander-in-Chief, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu should not remain comfortable in the Presidential Villa while 25 schoolgirls have been kidnapped. He needs to show leadership by taking the lead, as genuine leaders do during times of serious national crisis," the statement said.
The PDP also highlighted the recent attack at a church in Kwara State, contending that the president's response to the Maga abduction is not aligned with the severity of other security challenges across Nigeria.
Ememobong stated, "Insecurity and fear have turned into the everyday reality and new normal for Nigerians throughout the nation. However, the APC-backed government keeps making complete denials, justified explanations, hollow promises, and other shallow actions like the President's canceled visit."
He claimed that without "additional strategic measures," the trip cancellation would simply be another media ploy designed to gain public support and compassion, instead of addressing the critical need to protect lives and property throughout Nigeria.
If this constituted a political emergency (similar to the situation in Rivers State), President Tinubu would have utilized every possible method and resource, both legally and beyond, to resolve it.
The PDP stated that Nigerians are fed up with "symbolic actions like expressions of sympathy and canceled trips," and urged the president to demonstrate "strong leadership, strategic measures, and real support for the security agencies, particularly those on the front lines, instead of superficial efforts aimed at gaining political advantage."
On the morning of November 17, 2025, individuals suspected to be robbers targeted the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School located in Maga, within the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
They entered the boarding school by climbing the fence, engaged in a shootout with security staff, and took 25 female students from their dorms.
During the attack, the school's vice principal, Hassan Makuku, was shot and died. Local officials stated that some of the kidnapped girls have managed to escape, with at least two reportedly having gone into remote fields.
Security personnel, such as specialized police units, the armed forces, and community patrols, have initiated a joint effort to locate and retrieve individuals, searching nearby woodlands and potential paths of escape.
The Kebbi State Government, along with federal officials, has shown anger, and the Senate has demanded quick action and additional support for security.
In another incident of violence, armed individuals targeted a local branch of the Christ Apostolic Church in Kwara State, resulting in the death of at least three attendees and the kidnapping of the pastor together with other members of the congregation.
The event, taking place at a religious gathering, has increased concerns about increasing robbery and attacks on innocent people.
