PDP Court Extends Convention Deadline to Friday

A High Court in Oyo State, located in Ibadan, has once more issued a temporary order preventing any disruption to the upcoming National Convention of the People's Democratic Party, PDP, set to take place on November 15 and 16 in Ibadan.
The add-on will stay in effect until Friday, when the main case is scheduled for another review.
In her decision issued yesterday, Justice Ladiran Akintola directed that the temporary injunction previously granted based on an application submitted by the claimant/seeker remains in effect until the case is resolved by the court.
The judge, following arguments presented by lawyers for both sides, postponed the case until Friday to continue the proceedings.
Additionally, addressing an application for joining the case submitted by another party, Justice Akintola ruled that the request could not be considered as it was not signed by the person making the statement.
Nevertheless, Emmanuel Ukala, SAN, representing the defendant, contended that the question of authorship did not make the application invalid because the deponent's identity was clearly confirmed.
He argued that the missing part did not constitute a complete lack of a signature.
As a reply, the sitting judge stated that although the application could not be accepted in its current format, it could be resubmitted correctly.
Speaking with reporters just after the session, Mr. Musibau Adetunmbi, SAN, representing the claimant, outlined the situation, stating, "We were preparing to submit the application for joining when the Court found that the affidavit had not been signed."
Nevertheless, the other party has shown willingness to submit another one. This is what occurred in court today.
He stated that the temporary injunction issued by the court previously continues to be in effect and can be enforced until the main case is heard.
It is worth noting that the court, in a previous decision regarding the ex-parte motion submitted by the claimant/applicant, permitted the PDP to carry out its National Convention as planned in Ibadan on Saturday.
The applicant had requested an order preventing the defendants, Acting National Chairman, Umar Iliya Damagum; the governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (on his own behalf and for members of the National Convention Organising Committee); and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from interrupting or hindering the party's convention. The court also instructed the PDP leadership to strictly follow the guidelines, timeline, and activity schedule previously issued for the convention.
PDP remains firm on the convention
In the meantime, the PDP has stated that its 2025 National Convention will proceed as planned this weekend in Ibadan, regardless of what it called the APC's last-minute efforts to disrupt the gathering.
The opposing party provided a guarantee yesterday, stating that there was no accuracy to the claims indicating the convention had been delayed. The event, as mentioned, is still scheduled for Saturday, November 15, and Sunday, November 16, 2025.
In a statement from Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary and head of the Publicity and Communication Sub-Committee of the National Convention Organising Committee, NCOC, the party called on its members and the broader public to ignore the 'false' and 'misleading' allegations reportedly being spread by individuals affiliated with the ruling APC.
"The National Working Committee, NWC, and the 2025 National Convention Organizing Committee of the PDP inform all party members and the public that the 2025 PDP National Convention has not been delayed but will take place as planned on Saturday, 15th and Sunday, 16th November, 2025 in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State," Ologunagba stated.
The PDP alleged that the APC was promoting false information as part of what it described as a failed attempt to disrupt the convention and undermine the opposition.
"The NWC and the NCOC call on party members and all Nigerians to ignore false statements being spread by certain people, who have been found to be hired by the APC in a futile effort to prevent the PDP National Convention," the party said.
Ologunagba also claimed that the APC was conspiring to undermine the opposition, calling the action an attack on Nigeria's democracy that would be legally opposed.
"We know about the schemes of the APC to undermine the opposition and establish a single-party system in the nation; a plan that will be legally opposed," he added.
