PDP Crisis: Self-Inflicted, Yet Convention Presses On — Wabara
The governing committee of the People's Democratic Party has claimed that the current crisis affecting the party is of its own making, although it added that the party's national convention set for Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, will proceed as scheduled.
The head of the BoT and former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, made this statement on Thursday in Abuja during the release of the BoT Reconciliation Committee's report.
He believes the party continues to be a strong entity and is working on redefining its position in preparation for upcoming elections.
"It is entirely feasible for us to attend the convention. All the party's organs—the Governors’ Forum, the National Working Committee, and the Board of Trustees—have approved our participation. Our previous communiqué also referred to this," Wabara said.
Nevertheless, he mentioned that the party would comply with any legal court directive that could influence the convention's timetable.
"If the courts stop us, we are a lawful group. We will follow the law or the final directive, depending on the situation," he stated.
In response to allegations that the BoT's involvement was delayed, Wabara rejected the idea, stating that the PDP's issues were "self-inflicted" and resulted from competing personal and political agendas.
"There is truly no crisis. All the issues we face within the PDP are of our own making. In politics, it's all about interests. Some individuals wish for the party to be eliminated now so they can bring it back in 2031 for their personal gains," he stated.
He assured the Board of its dedication to maintaining the party's unity and existence, stating, "I am not considering running for anything. Our choices will consistently serve the PDP and the Nigerian people. The PDP continues to be a party for the people."
Previously, the Chairman of the BoT Reconciliation Committee, Amb Hassan Adamu, stated that the committee, which was launched on November 5, 2025, promptly started discussions with important stakeholders to guarantee a seamless and trustworthy convention.
"We have engaged with different parts of our party—the leaders, the Governors’ Forum, and other groups—and we have finally developed our suggestions for a smooth convention. It was a difficult process, but we have given it our utmost effort," Adamu stated.
Delivering the report, Mike Oghiadomhe, Secretary of the Committee and former Chief of Staff to President Goodluck Jonathan, revealed that the panel conducted thorough discussions with key stakeholders, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, members of the Governors’ Forum, the NWC, and suspended national officials.
"We had discussions with the Minister of the FCT, the Governors’ Forum, and the NWC, which was represented by the Deputy National Chairman in the absence of Ambassador Damagum. We also met with the suspended National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu, the National Organising Secretary, and the National Legal Adviser," Oghiadomhe stated.
He mentioned that the committee also sought input from former Senate President Bukola Saraki and other high-ranking party members prior to preparing its report and suggestions.
"We are confident that we have resolved all the major concerns affecting our party. Our suggestions offer a clear path for sustainable and efficient party management during this crucial period," he concluded.
Six instances of the reconciliation report, together with appendices featuring supporting materials, were delivered to the BoT.
The board is set to discuss the suggestions and outline the subsequent steps before the PDP's highly anticipated convention, where new leadership will be established.
The gathering is encountering an uncertain future due to the split within the party.
Despite the suspension of the party's National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu; National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, and National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, the three are the founders of a new group headed by Abdulrahman Mohammed.
This group is supported by the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike.
The NWC, led by Damagum, is relying on the backing of the governors, the BoT, and other party institutions.
