President Cyril Ramaphosa has stated that the United States has changed its decision regarding plans to skip the G20 Leaders Summit happening this weekend.

Ramaphosa issued this statement during aEvent of European Union leaders at the Sandton Convention Centre on Thursday night.

The American team participating in the summit is anticipated to be headed by representatives from the embassy located in Pretoria.

Although the announcement was made at the last minute, Ramaphosa expressed approval of the decision, stating that it was a favorable development and emphasizing that boycott tactics are ineffective.

"We have been informed by the United States regarding involvement in the G20 Leaders' Summit. This is a notification that is currently under discussion. "There has been a shift in decision regarding participation in some form or another," the President said.

Ramaphosa stated that, at this point, he is unaware of how the US involvement will be structured, as the announcement arrived at the last minute, with most global leaders already having arrived in the country.

"Such conversations are still in progress. Therefore, we must participate in these discussions to determine their feasibility and what they ultimately signify. Nevertheless, in a sense, we view this as a positive development," he stated.

Former US President Donald Trump had previously stated that the United States would not attend the G20 Summit and that no official would take part in any G20 discussions. His decision to skip the international event followed his continued assertions about a supposed white genocide within the nation—claims that have been consistently refuted.

This year, Trump stated he would not participate in the event, with his Vice President J.D. Vance taking his place. Nevertheless, shortly before the summit, he reversed his decision and called for a complete boycott.

His criticism occurred as relations between the two nations had been deteriorating since he began his second term, reaching a peak with a meeting with Ramaphosa at the Oval Office in May.

Although the slight reversal occurred, Ramaphosa made an indirect criticism of Trump earlier on Thursday while speakinghis final speech at the G20 Social Summit.

Ramaphosa stated that the era of leveraging international meetings to promote a 'limited global agenda' has concluded.

He stated that no nation should be permitted to intimidate another, emphasizing that every country, irrespective of its location, should be considered equal.

It is not possible for a country's geographic position, economic status, or military strength to decide who has a voice and who is ignored. This implies that no nation should bully another. We are all equal.

Even though the specifics about who will represent the United States at the G20 Summit remain unverified, Marc Dillard, who holds the position of US Deputy Chief of Mission in South Africa, Kenya, and Malawi, is among the highest-ranking embassy officials in the nation.

As per the US Embassy's website in South Africa, Dillard has worked in Washington and overseas, holding positions such as Deputy Chief of Mission and ChargĂ© d’Affaires in Nairobi and Budapest, as well as Director of the Office of Economic Policy and Public Diplomacy within the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs.
