The eight-year partnership between Arsenal and Rwanda, featuring the 'Visit Rwanda' logo on the shirts of Premier League players, has concluded.Reports in October 2025 indicated continuous discussions to extend the collaboration, which had been previously prolonged in 2021, yet, based on recent updates, it appears no progress has been made.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Arsenal's chief executive, Richard Garlick, expressed gratitude to the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) for their collaboration, which he mentioned has come to an end. As a pioneer, Rwanda's collaboration with Arsenal established a precedent for other African nations to seek comparable agreements, with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) recently finalizing a €44 million ($50.67 million) deal with FC Barcelona, along with others involving AS Monaco and AC Milan.
Barcelona has reached a $46 million sponsorship agreement with the DRC to boost tourism. "We are proud of what this partnership has accomplished over many years of cooperation. It set a new standard for tourism boards globally, increasing awareness and visits to Rwandan tourism at a speed that traditional campaigns could never achieve," said RDB CEO Jean-Guy Afrika.
The disputesAlthough both sides claimed the end of the partnership agreement was mutual, the Arsenal-Rwanda collaboration has recently been plagued by ethical and political issues, which analysts believe may have led to its conclusion.
Rwanda has contributed $107 million over the last eight years to Arsenal.
In August, Bayern Munich ended its five-year commercial sponsorship agreement with Rwanda, which was established in 2023, and shifted to a non-commercial three-year collaboration centered exclusively on youth football initiatives.
Even though the club did not clearly explain the motivations behind terminating the agreement, the choice came after significant outside examination and demands to halt it.
Rwanda was compensating Arsenal for high-profile branding opportunities, including the "Visit Rwanda" logo on the matchday kits' sleeves, LED displays at the Emirates Stadium, and the backdrops used during post-game interviews.
The collaboration, set to end with the current season, faced backlash from part of the club's supporters, who argued that Arsenal should not have been linked to a nation with a questionable human rights history.
Congo requests clubs to terminate the 'Visit Rwanda' sponsorship. In July, a group consisting of Arsenal's LGBTQ+ supporters, known as Gay Gooners, launched a strong campaign advocating against the continuation of the partnership.
A survey of their more than 2,500 members globally revealed that just 2 percent of those who responded believed the £10 million ($13.06 million) annual sponsorship from Visit Rwanda should be continued, whereas 86 percent wished for the agreement to terminate and a new alternative to be sought.
In February, the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo urged Arsenal to terminate the sponsorship following the capture of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in the east, by M23 rebels, who are believed to be supported by Rwanda.
Tourism figures from RDB indicate that the collaboration has boosted the nation's tourism, supporting this claim with data showing visitor arrivals reached 1.3 million, and tourism earnings increased to $650 million, representing a 47 percent growth since the partnership was established.
Although it also stated the deal "covered its own costs" via indirect advantages, such as a 15 percent increase in foreign direct investment inquiries related to branding.
However, some analysts challenge the link between this growth and Arsenal players wearing the "Visit Rwanda" logo on their matchday shirts, arguing that the country's tourism figures were already increasing prior to the agreement, and that the deal had minimal effect, with the numbers likely to have risen regardless.
Existing data indicates significant and steady growth prior to sponsorship, fueled by increased gorilla permit fees, the arrival of new hotels, the inauguration of the Kigali Convention Centre, and the rebranding following the genocide.
Tourism earnings in Rwanda increased twofold from 2010 to 2017, rising from $201 million to $496 million, with a total growth of 147 percent and an annual increase of 13 percent. This rate of expansion significantly exceeded the revenue growth observed between 2018, when the collaboration was established, and 2024.
According to data, tourism earnings rose from $498 million in 2018 to $650 million in 2024, representing a 30% increase.
Analysts claim that the sponsorship merely enhanced and sped up an already existing trend, particularly within European and high-value market segments, but it did not initiate growth from a low or stagnant starting point.
Is Rwanda turning its attention toward the North American market now? The recent signing of long-term sponsorship agreements with the NBA team, Los Angeles Clippers, and the NFL team Rams indicates Rwanda is focusing on the North American tourism sector, which appears to hold greater potential.
Rwanda is working hard to preserve its football deals and bike race events.
