Dar es Salaam. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has named Mr Bakari Machumu, the former Chief Executive Officer of Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL), as the new head of Presidential Communications. He takes over from Ms Sharifa Nyanga, who has been given different duties.

In the meantime, another former chief executive of MCL, Mr. Tido Mhando, has been appointed as the President's Advisor for Media and Communications.

The statement was released on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, by the Chief Secretary, Dr Moses Kusiluka, who also introduced additional top-level appointments to enhance the nation's communication and diplomatic efforts.

Mr. Machumu, a well-regarded figure in the media industry with almost 30 years of expertise in journalism, managing newsrooms, and corporate planning, stepped down from MCL in early 2024 following his leadership during a time of major digital change.

With his guidance, MCL established itself as one of the leading media organizations in Tanzania, increasing its online presence and updating its content approach.

Prior to working at the State House, he established BSM Washauri, a communications and consulting company that has assisted organizations throughout East Africa with strategic communications, public relations, crisis handling, and brand development.

His transition from the media sector to consulting is generally viewed as preparation for the strategic communication needs of the new position at State House.

Meanwhile, Mr Mhando, who was the MCL CEO when Mr Machumu served as Executive Editor at MCL, will now take on the role of President's Adviser for Media and Communications.

After finishing his time at MCL, Mr. Mhando moved to Azam Media, where he served as CEO. Tido Mhando retired in 2023.

Mr. Mhando is considered one of Tanzania's most experienced media professionals, with a career that has included high-level editorial and leadership positions, such as at the BBC and the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC).

His broad background in public engagement, broadcasting, and media advancement is anticipated to strengthen the State's communication system.

The declaration also stated that Mr. Lazaro Nyalandu, a former cabinet member and seasoned government official, has been named as Ambassador.

Mr. Nyalandu once held the position of Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism and has participated in numerous policy and diplomatic efforts, providing him with a comprehensive foundation for his new role in representing Tanzania internationally.

Experts note that the appointments indicate President Hassan's aim to enhance skilled communication and foreign relations during a period when public involvement and international standing are crucial focuses.

The inclusion of two experienced media professionals, Machumu and Mhando, in high-ranking positions within State communication is anticipated to boost cooperation, ensure more coherent public messaging, and expand the government's capacity to react quickly to domestic and global events.

Media experts note that Mr. Machumu offers a fair grasp of both the newsroom and government communication requirements.

A specialist in mass communication, Ms Nancy Mbena, stated that his appointment represents "a conscious attempt to enhance the professionalism of government communication."

Mr. Machumu is recognized for his honesty, extensive industry expertise, and skill in handling intricate stories," she stated. "His arrival at State House might bring about a more open, prompt, and effective communication environment.

With Mr. Machumu and Mr. Tido Mhando both assuming high-level advisory positions at State House, experts believe the appointments are expected to enhance cooperation, transparency, and strategic communication from the presidency.

This mix combines experience, organizational knowledge, and a unique grasp of Tanzania's changing media environment," said Ms. Mbena. "It is an effective combination.
