Olusegun Awolowo, the grandson of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, has passed away.
The Awolowo family confirmed his death on Thursday. He was 62 years old.
The statement said, 'With deeply sorrowful hearts, we announce the demise of our cherished husband, father, and grandfather, Olusegun Awolowo.'
The family referred to him as "the most extraordinary husband, father, and grandfather in the world — reliable, knowledgeable, deeply affectionate, and the unwavering foundation of our family."
A faithful servant of Nigeria, he devoted his life to serving his nation with vision, honesty, enthusiasm, and steadfast dedication. He was a genuine family man, a wonderful friend, a dedicated follower of God, and an exceptionally admirable person.
We are devastated by this loss, yet deeply thankful for his life, his impact, and the love he gave to each of us. May his kind heart find eternal tranquility.
In response, President Bola Tinubu conveyed profound sorrow at the death of Segun Awolowo.
Tinubu expressed his sympathy to the Awolowo family via a statement released on Thursday, signed by his Special Adviser for Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The President referred to Segun Awolowo's passing at the age of 62 as a sad and heartbreaking loss "not just for the Awolowo family, but for the whole nation."
He mentioned that the late Segun stood out as a member of the Awolowo family.
Segun demonstrated the Awolowo legacy in his looks, personality, and behavior. Similar to his grandfather, he was a lawyer dedicated to upholding truth and justice.
"He played a vital role in Nigeria's development. He worked diligently as the Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council from 2013 to 2021, becoming the longest-serving executive director in the organization's history," the President stated.
He stated: “My heartfelt sympathy and condolences go to his wife and children, the Awolowo family, and his mother, Sisi Abah Folawiyo.”
I also express my sympathy to the governments and people of Ogun State, the whole South-West geopolitical region, and Nigeria, regarding this heartbreaking loss. May his soul find peace.
The governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, also conveyed his condolences, referring to Awolowo as a "true gentleman, a bold voice, and an outstanding public official."
In a statement released by his press assistant, Kayode Akinmade, Abiodun expressed that he was completely shocked by the news but will hold dear the memories of having known him.
"All who knew Mr. Segun Awolowo described him as friendly, very smart, helpful, and laid-back," the governor stated.
The governor added, 'His time on earth may have been short, but it made a significant difference,' expressing sympathy to his wife, children, the Awolowo family, and all Nigerians.
Born two months following his father's passing, Awolowo overcame initial obstacles to establish a remarkable profession.
He pursued studies in Law and was admitted to the Bar in December 1989, subsequently working at the law firms of Abayomi Sogbesan & Co. and GOK Ajayi & Co.
He subsequently worked as a Special Assistant for Traditional Institutions, Legal Due Diligence, and Legal Issues during President Olusegun Obasanjo's tenure, and occupied various important roles in later governments.
Between 2007 and 2011, he held the positions of Secretary for Social Development and Secretary of Transport, and from 2013 to 2021, he served as Executive Director of the NEPC.
In July 2021, he was collectively chosen as the President of the National Trade Promotion Organizations representing ECOWAS member nations.
