The Buganda Road Chief Magistrate's Court in Kampala has sent a third defendant to the High Court regarding abrutal daylight theft at Esso Corner, Jinja Road—a wrongdoing that was recorded on CCTV and extensively shared last year.
On Friday, robbery suspect Ibra Kasozi, also known as Kisenyi, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi, concluding a period during which prosecutors claimed he had been evading capture while his co-defendants had already been sent for trial in connection with the assault on an Indian man.
Kayizzi told the defendant that the lower court had no additional authority in the matter.
"You are now ordered to appear before the High Court for trial during the upcoming court session. This indictment will assist you in building your defense," the magistrate said to him as the crowded courtroom remained silent.
Kasozi is joined by Mubarak Sharayimu, also known as Musiramu Mundari, and Sharif Bbaale, also referred to as TMS Boss or Maddi, who were previously committed.
Each of the three individuals is facing allegations of aggravated robbery under Sections 266 and 267(2) of the Penal Code Act.
As per the charges, the defendants and other individuals yet to be apprehended are alleged to have carried out a violent theft on July 15, 2024, at the bustling Esso Corner intersection.
The deceased, Joshi Keshav, was traveling to his job on a boda boda from his residence in Bukoto, Kampala.
He was carrying a black laptop bag that included an HP laptop, Shs150,000, a charger, a mouse, and keys, all worth Shs2.5 million.
The head of the public prosecution service states that as traffic decreased around noon, four motorcycles with approximately twelve men approached the intersection.
The group, reportedly equipped with a panga, is believed to have been heading towards Kasangati for a theft operation.
The DPP states that when the complainant was noticed, Kasozi redirected the group.
"A3 (Kasozi) struck the complainant on the left cheek near his ear. The complainant collapsed. Two of the assailants are said to have taken the laptop bag, while the others created a protective circle," the indictment says.
Keshav was left in a state of shock by the roadside. Witnesses subsequently guided him to the Nkurumah Road Police Station.
"Individuals advised me, 'Hurry to the police; these youths are hazardous," he was quoted as saying in his testimony to the authorities.
That same day, law enforcement was alerted to another theft carried out by the same group on Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road in the capital of Uganda.
A gang member, reportedly carrying a panga, was killed by an angry crowd.
Surveillance video from various locations provided investigators with a key development. A purple Haojue motorcycle, with the license plate UDG 931Q, was recognized in the footage. A subsequent vehicle profile report connected it to Eagle General Traders Ltd.
The indictment states that the motorcycle was provided through an asset financing loan agreement to a woman named Namulondo Hanifah.
A monitoring system employed by Mogo Loans located the motorcycle at Lugoba Police Station in Kawempe, where it had been seized.
Medical documents indicate that Keshav suffered damage to his left cheek, the interior of his mouth, and his palm, which have been categorized as injuries.
Later, investigators recognized the suspects with assistance from their contacts and from the extensively circulated CCTV video.
Sharayimu was the first to be arrested on July 16 and is said to have admitted involvement.
"I was with the others," he is said to have stated in his charge-and-caution statement.
Bbaale denied involvement.
Kasozi is reported to have confessed to being involved with the others after his arrest.
The Crown Prosecution Service plans to present medical documents, images of the victim, charge-and-advice statements, and the motorcycle's assessment report in court.
The DPP claims that the evidence will demonstrate that the defendant has no valid defense.
Kasozi will now wait for the subsequent High Court criminal session to submit his plea.
