Tinubu Mourns Tragic Killings in Nigeria - Government Response

The Federal Government (FG) has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is "deeply affected" by the incidents of killing occurring in various regions across the nation, and is dedicated to tackling the security issues causing the violence.
The Information and National Orientation Minister, Mohammed Idris, made this statement while supporting the government's approach to security issues during an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today show on Friday.
He mentioned that recent critiques during a U.S. House Subcommittee on Africa session, where Nigeria was reclassified as a "Country of Particular Concern," did not recognize the government's continuous actions.
Idris stated that the accusations brought up during the hearing, such as those made by Representative Bill Huizenga alleging the administration had minimized extensive killings and assaults on Christian groups, do not present the complete reality of Nigeria's security efforts.
He claimed that the government has achieved what he called substantial advancements in counterterrorism since Tinubu took office. He mentioned that more than 13,000 militants had been killed and over 17,000 apprehended during this time.
I believe occasionally, we overlook some of the achievements we've accomplished in the battle against these outlaws, criminals, and certain extremists.
We've made significant progress in this area. From May 2023 until now, more than 13,500 of these offenders—figures provided by security agencies—have been neutralized or removed from our society.
"More than 17,000 individuals have been taken into custody. Many of them, even as we speak today, have already appeared in court, while some have received their sentences," he stated.
Idris emphasized that although there have been recorded improvements, the president is concerned about the loss of life, referring to Tinubu as "deeply saddened" by each death, irrespective of the victim's religious background.

The President is profoundly distressed. The administration, as a whole, is also deeply distressed. We do not need a scenario in which anyone, regardless of whether they are Christian or Muslim, is killed. That is one.
"Wherever that individual might be, it's detrimental to our nation, and it's not beneficial for anyone. No one should be pleased that someone is losing their life without a valid reason," Idris stated.
He dismissed assertions that the violence constitutes a deliberate religious campaign, maintaining that the killings impact both Christians and Muslims.
Are there people being killed? Yes. Is that a positive outcome? No. Is the government taking action? A significant amount.
But there is something deeply important that we all must address. And that is the idea or belief, in certain circles, that what is referred to as religious genocide exists in Nigeria.
"No, there isn't. What we are witnessing is that individuals are losing their lives, with Christians being killed in certain areas, just like Muslims are. It's a tragic situation. No one should be pleased about this," he stated.
