Ho (V/R), Nov. 21, GNA – The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) conducted its Seventh Inaugural Lecture to celebrate Professor Elvis Enowbeyang Tarkang, the Dean of International Programmes, upon his promotion to the position of full Professor, which represents the pinnacle of his academic journey.
The session, conducted on Thursday, centered around the topic: “Creating Customized Interventions Integrated with Proven Research and Theory to Eliminate AIDS by 2030 in Ghana.”
Professor Tarkang pointed out that the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) continues to be a significant public health issue, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, even with worldwide advancements in addressing the HIV epidemic.
He mentioned that the UNAIDS global 95-95-95 goals offer a clear path toward eliminating AIDS by 2030, but Ghana still encounters major challenges.
He referenced the 2024 Ghana AIDS Commission report, which showed that among 334,721 individuals living with HIV (PLHIV), only 68 percent were aware of their status, 47 percent were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), and only 42 percent had reached viral suppression.
"These gaps in the treatment process pose a risk to achieving control over the epidemic," he stated.
Professor Tarkang highlighted the importance of gaining a more comprehensive insight into the factors influencing HIV testing, adherence to ART, viral suppression, and HIV-related stigma and discrimination (SAD).
He claimed that actions based on principles from behavioral science were more successful than those lacking a theoretical basis.
He described how frameworks like the Health Belief Model (HBM), Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), and Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) can assist in creating successful intervention strategies.
He cited multiple studies carried out in Ghana that utilized these theories to enhance HIV testing participation, adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), practices related to post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and efforts to reduce stigma, emphasizing the importance of tackling stigma on individual, community, and institutional levels.
"Stigma and discrimination hinder treatment compliance and access to testing. To eradicate AIDS by 2030, SAD needs to be addressed directly," he stated, citing the Ubuntu philosophy as a culturally rooted method to enhance empathy, community assistance, and respect for people living with HIV.
He believed that eradicating AIDS in Ghana could be achieved if strategies focused on behavioral factors were shown to affect results.
"Concentrating on theoretical models that demonstrate no substantial impact will be unhelpful," he further stated.
The Deputy Chancellor of UHAS, Prof. Lydia Aziato, who led the gathering, praised Prof. Tarkang for a presentation that showcased insight, applicability, and real-world significance in the field of public health initiatives.
She highlighted the significance of integrating qualitative and quantitative research methods, performing comprehensive situational assessments prior to launching interventions, and utilizing various behavioral theories to ensure an effective match for public health programs.
Professor Aziato also discussed the significance of culturally rooted ideas like Ubuntu, which promoted compassion, understanding, and peaceful coexistence within communities, values she emphasized were crucial for healthcare provision and health improvement.
She called on faculty and researchers to maintain responsibility, pointing out that research funding and academic positions carry obligations.
"Prof. Tarkang has demonstrated that it's possible to climb the ranks through proof and outstanding performance. His professorship is on par with the best anywhere," she stated.
The gathering included tribal leaders, relatives and companions, Deans, academic staff, UHAS Council delegates, pupils, and other notable individuals who offered messages of support, praise, and awards to honor Prof. Tarkang.
The event honored not only his academic accomplishments but also his work in HIV research, promotion of public health, and initiatives related to internationalization at UHAS.
