Ukraine's General Tours Besieged City as Zelensky Faces Corruption Probe

The top military leader of Ukraine stated on Thursday that he met with soldiers defending the frontline in a crucial eastern city under siege by Russian forces, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dealt with the consequences of a corruption scandal affecting his government.
Following the resignation of Zelensky's justice and energy ministers on Wednesday due to an inquiry into suspected corruption within the energy sector, the government dismissed the vice president of Energoatom, the state-run nuclear power company seen by investigators as central to the bribery scheme.
Several officials from Energoatom's finance, legal, and procurement departments, along with a consultant to the company's president, were also removed during the purge, stated Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko late Wednesday.
A court in Kyiv has started reviewing evidence from anti-corruption officials, following a 15-month inquiry that involved 1,000 hours of intercepted calls. This investigation led to the arrest of five individuals and linked seven others to a scheme that is said to have generated around $100 million.
Tymur Mindich, a co-founder of Zelensky's Kvartal 95 media production company, is believed to be the key figure behind the conspiracy. His current location remains undisclosed.
The inquiry has raised doubts about the knowledge of the nation's top leaders regarding the scheme. It has also brought back recollections of Zelensky's effort last summer to limit Ukraine's anti-corruption agencies. He reversed his decision following large-scale demonstrations in Ukraine and influence from the European Union, which has urged the country to tackle deep-rooted corruption.
Although Ukrainians showed frustration and shock over the developing scandal, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU would release a 6 billion euro ($7 billion) loan to Ukraine on Thursday and pledged additional funds for Kyiv.
"We will address Ukraine's financial requirements for the upcoming two years," she stated during a speech at the European Parliament.
The European Union and other international allies have invested funds into Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Russia has continuously targeted the power grid, necessitating ongoing restoration efforts.
The European Union is examining ways to generate additional funds for Ukraine, potentially through the confiscation of frozen Russian assets, securing financing from financial markets, or certain EU member states contributing the money individually.
Russian President Vladimir Putin "believes he can survive longer than us" in the conflict regarding Ukraine's future, nearly four years after Russia's full-scale invasion of its neighboring country, von der Leyen stated.
And this is a clear mistake," she stated. "Now is the time to proceed, with renewed energy, to counter Putin's manipulative effort to gain time and compel him to return to the negotiating table.
In the meantime, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine's highest-ranking military official, personally visited the units engaged in defending Pokrovsk in the eastern Donetsk area and coordinated operations, according to a statement he shared on the Telegram messaging platform.
Ukrainian soldiers are engaged in intense street combat with Russian troops within the city, striving to avoid being encircled by a larger Russian military contingent as Russia's strategy of attrition gradually advances through the rural areas.
Syrskyi mentioned that the main objectives are to reclaim control over specific parts of the city, along with safeguarding supply routes and establishing new ones to ensure troops receive supplies and the injured can be transported out.
"It is not a matter of Russian control over the city of Pokrovsk or of the operational encirclement of Ukraine's military forces in the region," Syrskyi stated.
