The new US ambassador to Romania, Darryl Nirenberg, testified before the Foreign Affairs Committee in the US Congress on Thursday, November 19, as part of the confirmation procedure. Right from the start of the hearings, she questioned how the Pentagon's decision "to withdraw American troops from Romania, a crucial ally in the Black Sea region and close to Russian aggression," can be justified. However, the incoming ambassador did not answer the question directly.
US president Donald Trump announcedNirenberg is expected to become the new ambassador to Bucharest on May 21, one day following the announcement of the departure of Biden-nominated ambassador Kathleen Kavalec. He will serve as the primary U.S. representative in Romania, overseeing strategic collaboration, security, economic ties, and the bilateral agenda within the region.
"I am happy to announce that Darryl Nirenberg will serve as the next United States ambassador to Romania," Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, noting that Nirenberg has four decades of expertise in international affairs, including as a counselor for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "He will assist us in enhancing our relationship with Romania, supporting our military collaboration, and advancing and safeguarding America's economic and security interests overseas. Congratulations, Darryl!" the U.S. president concluded.
Nirenberg received his degree with honors from Colgate University and "obtained his J.D. from the George Washington University Law School during evenings while employed in the Senate, funding his own studies. For twenty years, he has been engaged in youth sports, coaching young baseball and soccer players, and has held positions on the Boards of the Arlington Little League, the Northern Virginia Ice Dogs, and the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Positive Coaching Alliance. He also acts as a mentor for Colgate University’s Thought into Action entrepreneurial development program," as stated by the State Department.
