Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo revealed that his government took over more than ₦600 billion in local and international debts, along with ₦180 billion that was owed to contractors by the previous administration led by Mr. Godwin Obaseki.
During his one-year anniversary event at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub in Benin City on Wednesday, Okpebholo mentioned that his administration has lessened the financial pressure by implementing "careful management, openness, and fiscal responsibility" as part of the SHINE Agenda.
"Regarding the economy and employment, we took over a debt of more than ₦600 billion in local and foreign obligations, along with ₦180 billion that was due to contractors. By implementing wise management and ensuring transparency, we have greatly lessened this burden," he stated.
He observed that his administration inherited Edo, which was burdened by corruption, financial obligations, instability, and lack of trust, but has started to regain public trust by reconstructing institutions and enhancing governance.
The governor disclosed that his administration had generated more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs within a year, along with initiating a ₦1 billion interest-free loan program for small businesses, traders, and craftsmen.
Regarding security, Okpebholo mentioned that Edo was "nearly a war zone" when he assumed his position, facing issues such as cult-related murders, abductions, and theft.
He mentioned that his administration took firm action by abolishing the ineffective anti-cultism law, introducing a more robust version, providing 60 Hilux vehicles and 400 motorcycles to security agencies, and hiring 2,500 officers for the Edo State Security Corps.
As he stated, the actions have significantly lowered crime, ensuring that "Edo will no longer serve as a refuge for lawbreakers."
The governor mentioned that his administration is also focusing on revitalizing the healthcare system, including the establishment of new Primary Health Centres in 18 areas, the distribution of diagnostic equipment throughout local government regions, and the start of a 100-bed Specialist Hospital in Udomi, Edo Central.
Regarding infrastructure, Okpebholo revealed that his administration has approved 28 new road projects covering a total of 255 kilometers, and for the first time in Edo's history, work has begun on two flyovers at Ramat Park and the Adesuwa–Sapele Road in Benin City.
He mentioned that the state's agricultural budget was raised from ₦4.5 billion to ₦57 billion, leading to the farming of more than 400 hectares as part of initiatives to address food shortages.
Regarding education, Okpebholo stated that 5,000 teachers have been officially hired and 63 schools have undergone improvements, with the funding for Ambrose Alli University increased from ₦41 million to ₦500 million per month to ensure academic consistency.
Reaffirming his dedication to the rule of law, the governor stated that his administration has re-established communication between different levels of government, appointed three judges who had been previously overlooked, brought back the Customary Court system, and reinforced traditional institutions.
A fresh Edo has emerged," he stated. "We will keep on developing chances that ensure the future of our population until each neighborhood experiences the impact of Effective Leadership.
The governor, Okpebholo, thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he referred to as "a father and leader," for his direction, leadership, and assistance, stating, "without him, much of our advancement would not have been achievable."
The event also included messages of goodwill from Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Chief Lucky Imasuen, Dr Pius Odubu, and other notable figures, who commended Okpebholo's consistent, reform-focused style of leadership.
A top-level policy committee delved deeper into key elements of Nigeria's economic prospects and the strategies Edo State is adopting for long-term development.
The gathering concluded with a festive ambiance, as attendees, officials, and residents praised the governor's efforts and expressed renewed trust in his direction — an inaugural year that marked a significant declaration of revitalization, bravery, and the emergence of a genuinely new Edo State.
