We Killed 13,000 Terrorists, Arrested 17,000 in Two Years – Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that over 13,000 militants have been killed and 17,000 additional individuals taken into custody since President Bola Tinubu took power.
Idris revealed the statistics on Friday in an interview with Channels Television’s Politics Today, addressing worries brought up during a recent U.S. House Subcommittee on Africa session.
The hearing reviewed Nigeria's reclassification as a "Country of Particular Concern" due to claims of Christian genocide.
Throughout the meeting, Representative Bill Huizenga criticized the Tinubu government for minimizing the extent of violence within the nation and not addressing the ongoing and frequent assaults on Christian groups.
In response, Idris mentioned that the administration had achieved measurable successes in the battle against terrorism and was experiencing "a great deal of progress in that area."
I believe occasionally, we overlook some of the achievements we've accomplished in the battle against these outlaws, criminals, and certain jihadists.
We've made significant progress in this area. From May 2023 until now, more than 13,500 of these offenders—figures provided by security agencies—have been neutralized or removed from our society.
"More than 17,000 individuals have been taken into custody. Many of them, even as we speak today, have already appeared in court, and some have received their sentences," he stated.
Idris mentioned that President Tinubu was "deeply saddened" by the violence throughout the nation, emphasizing that no individual should die based on their religious affiliation.

The President is profoundly distressed. The administration as a whole is also deeply distressed. We do not need a scenario in which anyone, regardless of whether they are Christian or Muslim, is killed. That is one point.
"Wherever that individual might be, it's detrimental to our nation, and it's not beneficial for anyone. No one should be pleased that someone is dying without a valid reason," Idris stated.
He also dismissed the portrayal of the crisis as focusing on one specific religious community, even as he recognized that violent attacks persisted in certain areas of the nation.
Are there people being killed? Yes. Is that a positive outcome? No. Is the government taking any action? A significant amount.
But there is something basic that we all need to discuss. And that is the idea or the belief in certain circles that what is referred to as religious genocide is happening in Nigeria.
"No, there isn't. What we are witnessing is that individuals are losing their lives, with Christians being killed in certain areas, just like Muslims are. It's a tragic situation. No one should be pleased about this," he stated.
