White House Condemns Ramaphosa Over Trump's G20 U-Turn Comments
Jonisayi Maromo White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has strongly condemned President Cyril Ramaphosa, claiming he "talks too much" following the South African leader's announcement that the United States has changed its stance and will attend this weekend’s G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, even though Washington had previously stated it would not participate.
Leavitt issued a sharply worded criticism during a White House press conference on Thursday, stating that Ramaphosa's remarks were incorrect and "unwelcome" to President Donald Trump's administration.
"I witnessed the South African president speaking out somewhat against the United States and its leader earlier today, and this language is not well-received by the president or his staff," she stated.
Her comments followed Ramaphosa informing attendees on Thursday that Pretoria had received "notification from the United States ... about a shift in position" concerning the boycott, and that Washington could now participate in the summit "in some form or another."
Nevertheless, the White House maintained that there had been no alteration in its stance. Leavitt and other U.S. officials stated that the American government would send solely a diplomatic representative to the handover event when South Africa transfers the G20 presidency to the United States — and would not take part in summit discussions or negotiations.
Ramaphosa regarding the US "shift in perspective"
IOL reported on Thursday that Ramaphosa informed attendees at a European Union leaders' meeting in Sandton that the United States had undergone what he referred to as a last-minute shift in position.concerning its intended boycott. He mentioned that Pretoria had received last-minute messages from Washington stating that the US would take part "in some form or another."
Despite emphasizing that talks were still in progress and the specific nature of US engagement was not yet clear, Ramaphosa viewed the situation as favorable.
"Politics of boycott are ineffective," he stated, noting that even a last-minute message from Washington was better than complete exclusion from the summit.
Ramaphosa mentioned that the structure of the U.S. delegation remained unclear as most global leaders had already begun arriving in Johannesburg.
According to IOL, representatives from the US Embassy in Pretoria are set to stand in for the United States.
SA states it will not be intimidated
Ramaphosa has consistently stated that South Africa "will not be intimidated" regarding its position as the G20 host, a stance he has adopted while countering scrutiny of the summit and the U.S. choice to avoid key discussions.
Conflict between Pretoria and Washington intensified following the US decision earlier this month to skip the summit as a form of protest, addressing several issues, including human rights. South Africa has responded by stating that such a boycott weakens multilateralism and the G20's reputation — particularly in the year when the summit is taking place on African territory for the first time.
The diplomatic conflict puts South Africa in a sensitive situation as the host country. Although Ramaphosa has stated that the US "needs to be here" as a founding G20 member, the meeting on Thursday highlights increasing frustration in Washington regarding what it perceives as Pretoria distorting American intentions.
