Bandits Kill 3, Abduct 64 in Zamfara
It was reported that bandits killed three people and took at least 64 others hostage on Saturday in Fegin Baza village, located within the Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Daily Trust reported yesterday that children and women were among those kidnapped and taken to an unspecified location.
Another four individuals were reported to have been injured by gunfire in the incident and were transported to Tsafe General Hospital.
A leader from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Umaru Moriki, was among the deceased on the Gusau-tsafe Road, close to Fegin village.
Moriki, who was reportedly killed while en route to Kaduna, held the position of Sarkin Fadan Moriki.
The event occurred one day following the visit by the Minister of State for Defence and former state government leader, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, who declared that the Defence Headquarters had sent additional troops.
The minister had also informed the state's residents that he would be meeting the troops to issue the marching order to handle criminals decisively. "Zamfara will no longer be intimidated by fear. We are taking all necessary measures to protect every community," he had said to the crowd.
While visiting, Matawalle also raised concerns about how federal funds have been used in the past two years. 'Zamfara has received more than one trillion naira. Prove to me what they have accomplished with it,' he stated.
Zamfara State stands as one of the major centers for bandit activity in the North West, experiencing frequent assaults on villages, roads, and agricultural areas.
Although there have been numerous military actions, peace efforts, and security missions, many armed groups still remain active in the forested regions of the state.
Recent abductions in Tsafe contribute to a prolonged history of murders, large-scale kidnappings, and thefts of livestock, which have compelled thousands of locals to leave their residences.
In the past few months, numerous communities within the Zurmi, Shinkafi, Maradun, Tsafe, and Bungudu Local Government Areas of the state have been targeted by attacks, resulting in many residents being forced to leave their homes, pay taxes, and offer ransoms to criminals.
Eyewitnesses reported to our reporters that the attackers, who attacked Fegin Baza on Saturday, numbered more than 30 and arrived on motorcycles.
The assailants reportedly fired upon Moriki's vehicle and additional cars.
In an interview with Daily Trust yesterday, a survivor named Abdulrahman Ahmad Dole stated that the bandits started firing as soon as they overtook drivers, including the vehicle carrying the state Commissioner of Police.
He mentioned that the robbers obstructed the Gusau-Funtua Road throughout the 15-minute operation.
Abdulrahaman also verified that the bandits took an unknown number of individuals.
"They took all the individuals transported in a commercial Golf Volkswagen and others," he stated.
Abdulrahaman described how the bandits executed the attack, stating: "The bandits may have aimed for the Zamfara State Police Commissioner since we were attacked just minutes after the CP's convoy passed our vehicle. A few minutes after the Police Commissioner's vehicle went by, we suddenly found ourselves surrounded by the bandits."
We were positioned in front of the Police Commissioner's motorcade, barely a short distance away from the bandits. Our vehicle was passed by the convoy, and immediately after, we heard gunshots coming from various directions.
I swiftly opened the car door and dashed into the bushes. The bandits pursued me on their motorcycles, firing shots, but I leaped into the elementary school and concealed myself before the soldiers arrived to save me.
We were aware that they were going to attack us.
A local from Fegin Baza, Malam Musa Yusuf, mentioned that the village had previously obtained information regarding an impending assault and deployed volunteers during the night.
He mentioned that the bandits eventually attacked the area around 10 a.m., but were unable to enter the village because of the opposition from the local guards.
He mentioned that the bandits then headed to the highway, where they committed the large-scale kidnapping.
He mentioned that two individuals, who had been previously taken, came from the village and were eventually freed after a ransom of N500,000 was paid.
Yusuf stated, "We received information on Thursday regarding the bandits' intention to assault our village. Consequently, we activated our local volunteer guards and spent the night of Friday on patrol. The bandits arrived only on Saturday around 10 a.m., coming in significant numbers and firing into the air. We were fortunate, as our people were all present."
So, they failed to enter the village. It was only after they realized they couldn't defeat our people that they altered their strategy, blocked the Gusau-Funtua Highway, and carried out an operation for a short period. It was during this operation that Hon. Moriki was killed.
Additionally, Ambassador Husseini Moriki stated that he was among those who spent the final moments with the late Moriki.
"We had a phone conversation, and approximately 45 minutes later, I received a call informing me that bandits had blocked and attacked commuters along the Tsafe. I knew Sarkin Fada was on his way there. I tried calling his number, but there was no response. I then quickly drove towards the location. Upon arriving at Kwatarkwashi, it was confirmed to me that he had been killed," he said.
The State Minister for Defence, Matawalle participated in the funeral prayer for the late Sarkin Fada, which took place at the Federal Low-cost, Tudun Wada Juma'at Mosque in Gusau. The prayer was conducted by Imam Alkali Abdullahi Yakubu.
Expressing sympathy to the family, Matawalle stated that Moriki's passing was a significant loss for the state and the country, given his charitable efforts that impacted the lives of many people, particularly his neighbors and relatives.

Another attack near Gusau
Later Saturday night, a different group of bandits reportedly attacked two sites on the outskirts of Gusau city, kidnapping locals.
A local from the region, known as Yusuf Zaza, reported that the thieves came from behind the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) station, took individuals hostage, and then moved towards the Bulunku area.
A different inhabitant from the Bulunku region, Malan Husseini, mentioned that the bandits' gunfire frightened the locals.
"They took a woman and her son in addition to those they abducted near the NTA station," Husseini stated.
After being approached for a response to the latest attacks in Zamfara, the state's Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Maikaba, did not respond to multiple calls made to his mobile number.
