The government of Kwara State has mandated the shutdown of over fifty educational institutions within five local government areas of the state.
The LGAs impacted are Ifelodun, Ekiti, Irepodun, Isin, and Oke Ero.
The choice comes after a fresh increase in robbery incidents in certain areas of the state.
The Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Lawal Olohungbebe, stated that the action became essential following security evaluations indicating that criminals escaping from current operations might focus on schools.
Olohungbebe stated that the government took action to prevent armed groups from utilizing students as shields.
He mentioned that the well-being of students was the main concern of the administration.
Government representatives stated that the shutdown, which involves accommodation, will continue until the regions are deemed secure.
Phone calls and a text message to the commissioner about the number of affected schools remained unanswered last night.
Additionally, the chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof Abdulraheem Adaramaja, did not respond to multiple phone calls and a text message that were sent to him regarding the matter.
Prior to this recent shutdown, Adaramaja mentioned during the Inter-Ministerial Press Briefing last month that the government had directed the closing of 45 public schools in various communities due to ongoing banditry in certain areas of the state.
Nevertheless, a high-ranking official from the ministry, who requested anonymity, mentioned that approximately 50 schools were impacted.
"Approximately 45 to 50 schools are impacted, but I am unable to provide the precise numbers at this time," the official stated.
A former head of a local government in Ekiti, who prefers not to have his name published, mentioned that there are more than 30 schools within the Ekiti Local Government area.
Ibraheem Abdullateef, the senior special assistant to the governor for communications, referred to the action as a forward-thinking measure.
He mentioned that joint security forces had already started actions aimed at restoring stability in the impacted areas.
He promised that the schools would open again once the security forces approve.
The state's Commissioner for Higher Education and Human Resources Development, Lawal Olohungbe, recently informed Daily Trust that the government is exploring the use of radio lessons for children in impacted areas.
He mentioned that the government examined the possibility of online education but soon recognized that limited internet access in rural areas would hinder its success.
Although online classes are beneficial and appealing, several key areas in Kwara North and other affected regions face connectivity problems. This leads us to the second alternative, which involves radio-based lessons, where we simply inform children to have access to the radio during certain hours. The state government is making efforts to enhance this scenario," he stated.
The school shutdown occurred a few days following an attack by armed individuals on a Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku.
Three devotees were verified to have been killed in the event, while more than 30 individuals are reported missing and remain held captive.
Security organizations have increased monitoring near educational institutions and communal areas.
Police Commissioner Adekimi Ojo informed our reporter during a phone conversation that Eruku has regained normal conditions through increased security measures.
He stated, "Extra reinforcements from Abuja are en route as I speak to you now due to the significance the government places on this issue."

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited Eruku on Wednesday following the military's entry into the community after the attack.

He called on residents to remain composed and back the current security initiatives, mentioning that further intelligence activities were being conducted in Kwara South's border areas to engage local volunteer groups and traditional leaders.
Three people killed in new assault
At the same time, three individuals are said to have lost their lives in a new assault carried out by thieves in the Bokungi community, within the Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.
It was reported that the incident took place on Wednesday at approximately 6:30pm, within 24 hours of the violent attack in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of the state.
Two of the individuals affected, both engaged in rice cultivation, were reportedly on their way to the fields to collect the harvested rice when the attackers attacked.
Local sources reported that four people, including a civilian, were first taken during the events.
One of the sources mentioned that the attackers subsequently killed the two rice farmers and injured a third person, who is reported to be a community watch member.

The initial assault led to the kidnapping of two individuals who were in the process of packaging their collected rice.

Multiple attempts to reach the council chairman and Police Commissioner, Adekimi Ojo, remained unanswered on Thursday.
However, a vigilante leader in Edu, Gina Gana, verified the event.
He stated, "The robbers assaulted the victim while they were getting ready to depart from the farm on Wednesday in the neighborhood."
They have taken the lives of three individuals, among them two farmers and a civilian guard, but the final victim has not yet been identified.
We have enjoyed a period of relative calm since the security situation reached its peak several months ago, with only isolated incidents of violence in certain areas, until this recent event.
On Thursday, the governor met with a joint group from the Eruku community and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) after the incident.
During the engagement, the governor stated, "On Tuesday (Wednesday), I headed a group consisting of the Police Commissioner, Ojo Adekimi, the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), and government officials to Eruku to express condolences to the people regarding the tragic event."
He expressed deep sorrow over the report of an assault on rice cultivators in the Bokungi region of Edu LGA. He strongly denounces these attacks. Bandits are demanding a ransom of N100 million per captive
In the meantime, the bandits who kidnapped worshippers from the Christ Apostolic Church, CAC, Eruku in the Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State have set a reward of N100 million for each of the abducted individuals.
A community leader and Olori Eta of Eruku, Chief Olusegun Olukotun, whose four family members were among those taken during the abduction, verified the bandits' demand.
Chief Olukotun, speaking to reporters on Thursday, mentioned that the bandits have begun reaching out to relatives.
Olukotun mentioned that he was inside the church with five of his family members during the event, noting that he and one of his dependents managed to flee the attack through the church window at approximately 6:06 pm.
Based on the information we obtained from the kidnappers' camp, they have categorized the captives based on their familial connections and are now contacting our individuals through each of these groups.
"Some individuals within the community have gotten calls from the kidnappers asking for N100 million per person, but regarding my own people, I haven't received any call about them, so I am still waiting," he stated.
Commenting on the progress, the head of the local administration, Hon. Awelewa Olawale, stated to Daily Trust on Thursday evening, "When I initially learned about it, I reached out to my councilor in Eruku, but he mentioned he was unaware and that none of the affected individuals had gotten in touch with them."
Olawale mentioned that he had recently finished a security meeting with community leaders and local patrols to explore potential rescue operations.
"They asked for supplies, which we have supplied, so they can unite with those already in the field," he stated.
He outlined the arrangements, saying, "We have two paths connecting the forest. Individuals already present will take one route, whereas those coming to join them will use the other via Idofin. According to our information, the bandits are still located in Ekiti."
