...urges Tinubu, Council of State to get involved
A former presidential candidate from the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has stated that the imprisonment of the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, could heighten tensions in the nation, especially against the backdrop of ongoing security issues and economic difficulties.
Obi stated that he has consistently believed that Kanu should never have been arrested initially, especially not sentenced to prison.
As stated by the former governor of Anambra State, productive interaction and discussion by the government on the matters Kanu advocated for are more effective in finding resolutions than turning to arrest, detention, and incarceration.
The announcement of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu's conviction should encourage every sincere Nigerian to take a moment and think deeply.
This arrives at a moment when our cherished country is dealing with significant economic difficulties, instability, and the effects of ineffective leadership.
"Instead of easing the tension, this unfortunate event might only make it worse," Obi tweeted on his X account on Saturday.
He continued, "I have consistently believed that Mazi Kanu should never have been arrested. His arrest, detention, and subsequent conviction reflect a failure in leadership and a lack of understanding regarding the matters involved."
For many years, I have repeatedly stated that dialogue, meaningful interaction, and participatory leadership provide the way to long-term peace. Coercion is required only when logic has been completely used up. In this instance, I believe that logic was not only not exhausted, but may not have been investigated at all, or not thoroughly examined.
The worries Kanu highlighted were not uncommon. The problems he sought answers for were not impossible to solve. It simply needed insight, compassion, and an openness to listen. In a healthy society, such complaints are addressed through conversation and changes designed to enhance solidarity.
The government's actions have only increased suspicion and caused an unnecessary diversion at a moment when people are struggling with difficult economic conditions and uncertainty. Although some might argue that 'the law has been followed,' effective leadership often requires more than a rigid, mechanical interpretation of the law.
Many countries globally turn to political approaches, negotiated agreements, and even amnesty when legal procedures alone fail to meet the larger goals of peace and stability. Nigeria is no different.
The management of Kanu's case reflects the government as a person stuck in a hole, yet rather than seeking an escape, continues to dig further. This exacerbates not only the government's situation but also the country's overall state.
If we genuinely wish for a new Nigeria—a nation that is united, peaceful, and advancing—our leaders must opt for healing instead of hostility, reconciliation rather than retaliation, and conversation over division. Only through addressing complaints with justice, equity, and empathy can we work toward a future where every Nigerian feels acknowledged, appreciated, and secure.
My final recommendation at this moment, without affecting anyone's perspective on the court's decision, is for us to remain hopeful about peace and reconciliation that will eventually occur.
I am also suggesting that the Presidency, the Council of State, and respected statesmen who care for this nation and are committed to unity and inclusiveness, must step up to the challenge, in pursuit of a permanent resolution.
