Kebbi Abduction: Farmers Forced to Flee, Residents Grieve

Following the kidnapping of 25 students from the Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, local residents reported they are unable to reach their farms due to the event.

A local farmer from the community, Idris Bako, mentioned that the incident that occurred on Monday has left the community in a state of shock, adding that they are filled with fear.

He mentioned that no one anticipated the community being subjected to such an assault.

No one anticipated that our children were being targeted for kidnapping. They are all innocent kids, and we are deeply worried about their situation in the hands of the criminals.

We become increasingly anxious as the day goes by with no information about them.

"We will keep praying that those sent out to locate them return with them to us as soon as possible," he stated.

Bako revealed that the girls' parents are suffering greatly because of the incident, and mentioned, "The only way for their pain to end is for the government to assist us in locating the children as they pledged."

A family member of one of the kidnapped girls, Iliyasu Zayyanu, stated that the family's atmosphere since Monday has been extremely distressing.

Although we are hoping for the return of our girls, everyone is currently in grief. It's not only the families who are affected, but the entire community.

"Until now, we haven't received any information about them. We have been waiting both day and night for them to make a statement, but we haven't heard anything," he said.

In the meantime, Dr Saidu Abubakar, the Chairman of the Kebbi Development Forum (KDF), has criticized the kidnapping of the girls, stating that the event has caused significant sorrow for the affected families and increased worry throughout the state.

The statement also said, 'We support the government and people of Kebbi State, especially the Zuru Emirate, during this challenging time, and we sincerely hope for the safe and prompt return of the kidnapped students.'

Nevertheless, he expressed worries regarding the conditions related to the removal of security staff from the school just prior to the attack, even though they had been stationed there earlier based on intelligence reports.

He stated, "KDF politely brings to the notice of the state government the following critical steps that could enhance security management and avoid such incidents."

"These actions involve conducting a vigorous and unified search-and-rescue effort, launching a separate inquiry into the roles and reactions of security staff, and enhancing the Office of the Special Adviser for Security," he stated.

He advocated for focusing on school safety, granting local government councils the authority to carry out their security duties, transforming the Zuru Airstrip into a Forward Operating Base for the Nigerian Air Force, and setting up a State Security Response and Coordination Centre.

Additionally, the Progressives Governors' Forum, PGF, stated on Thursday that it would offer complete backing to security forces in efforts to return the kidnapped schoolgirls to their homes.

The head of the Forum, Sen. Hope Uzodima, visited Kebbi along with other APC governors as part of a condolence trip to Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris.
