AbiaThe state governor, Alex Otti, along with the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, have emphasized the importance of communication in ensuring the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
The two regional leaders highlighted that communication continued to be the most effective way to secure Kanu's release.
The Federal High Court in Abuja handed down a life sentence to Kanu on Thursday for seven charges related to terrorism.
Justice James Omotosho sentenced him to life imprisonment on five of the charges, 20 years on one, and five years on another, with no possibility of a fine.
The judge observed that housing Kanu at the Kuje Correctional Centre could be unsuitable because of the potential for violence, indicating the necessity of a safer institution.
In response to the ruling, Otti stated it was not the end of the journey, promising the residents of the South-East that he had "initiated and will keep working towards his release."
In a statement signed by the governor and made public on Saturday, Otti mentioned that the event had deeply affected many individuals, leading to a climate of shock and grief across Abia State and further afield.
The governor stated that when troops attacked Kanu's family residence, resulting in property damage and loss of life, he denounced the unnecessary action and called for discussion as the most effective way to address the IPOB matter.
He stated, "I denounced that invasion and the subsequent killings once more, and presented detailed, carefully considered opinions and recommendations that I believed could help reduce tensions and bring the country together if the previous Federal Government was open to considering them."
This is because I understand that leadership involves emotional intelligence, self-control, and patience instead of force and aggression.
Alternative solution to begin shortly
Otti stated that "the inadequate handling of the IPOB matter during its early stages led to the current problem, so we must not let it persist and develop into a more severe and alarming situation."
He said, "I need to mention that certain agreements were reached that relied on the swift resolution of the case at the Federal High Court."
Regrettably, the issue remained unresolved until now. I am certain that with the judgment having been issued, the alternative solution will take effect.
It is revealing that this approach was shared with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu during my visit to him while he was under DSS detention earlier this year. Although Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has the right to challenge his conviction, I am pleased to let you know that I have initiated and will keep working on the previously agreed plan until he is released.
Assessment may increase strain – Obi
Meanwhile, Obi, in a statement shared on his X account on Saturday, referred to the ruling as "an unfortunate development" that could increase national tension instead of reducing it.
He stated that the news of Kanu's conviction should encourage Nigerians to think seriously, particularly "at a time like this" when the country is facing significant economic difficulties, rising insecurity, and the effects of long-term bad leadership.
Obi reiterated his longstanding position that Kanu's arrest and imprisonment could have been prevented, contending that the whole situation reflected a breakdown in leadership and an incorrect understanding of the fundamental problems.
He criticized the government for using force instead of seeking conversation or changes.
"Coercion is required only when all avenues of reasoning have been exhausted. In this instance, reasoning was not thoroughly examined, if it was considered at all," he remarked.
Ohanaeze youth group calls for Kanu's release
Additionally, Chika Adiele, the National Publicity Secretary of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Youth Wing, called on President Bola Tinubu to take action and free Kanu.
Adiele outlined Kanu's extended period of imprisonment and his deeply painful trial as a farce.
He stated that the release of the IPOB leader was still the sole solution for achieving long-term peace in the South-East region.
Adiele said, "We urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to show caution and free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu without delay, as his extended imprisonment and the painful proceedings he has endured are a farce."
