The camp of Democratic Party of Korea leader Jung Chung-rae officially denied on the 22nd the allegations made by Supreme Council member Lee Eun-ju that the party's constitutional and regulatory amendments for the so-called 'one person, one vote system' were being rushed through.
Senior Spokesperson Park Soo-hyun stated in a Facebook update, "This revision was not solely driven by the views of certain party leaders," and noted, "It was a central topic during the August 2 pre-convention, representing an agreement among party members, and a commitment made by the party leader."
With regard to Supreme Council member Lee Eun-ju's statement that "a considerable number of Supreme Council members voiced worries about the revision, and the agenda was approved while some members were not present," he remarked, "This is an opinion that contradicts the reality."
The day prior, when the Supreme Council decided to advocate for a revision that would make the voting value ratio between delegates and party members equal at 1:1, Supreme Council member Lee Eun-ju posted on Facebook, “I regret that although a considerable number of Supreme Council members, almost a majority, raised concerns and requested discussion, it was forcefully, quickly, or on a whim advanced.”
In reply, Senior Spokesperson Park stated, “(During yesterday’s Supreme Council meeting,) the individuals who suggested that 'more time for discussion is required' were Supreme Council member Lee, Han Jun-ho, and Hwang Myung-sun,” and added, “Representative Jung heard these views and also gave explanations.”
He added, "A member of the Supreme Council departed after expressing 'opposition,' and even though Supreme Council member Lee did not take part in the vote, Representative Jung noted that it was suitable to list her as 'opposition,' resulting in the final outcome of 7 in favor and 2 against."
Previously, Representative Jung Chung-rae officially announced on the 17th the revision of the 'one person, one vote system' to enter an era of 'party member sovereignty' and carried out a public opinion poll among all party members. When 86.8% of participants backed the agenda concerning the 'one person, one vote system' in this survey, Representative Jung remarked, "This is an irreversible trend."
Amid these developments, the Democratic Party's Innovation Committee, which includes supporters of Myung both within and outside the party, issued a statement on the same day, saying, "Although the idea of having both delegates and party members vote with one person, one vote is positive, there are numerous expressions from party members questioning, 'Is this really necessary?' regarding the method of collecting opinions, procedural legitimacy, and timing."
The Innovation Committee said, “The adjustment to equalize the voting power of delegates and party members with rights was done without consulting the members.” They further noted, “An overwhelming majority of 83.19% of those with voting rights did not take part in the survey. With just 240,000 supporters, making up 14.5%, the leadership's claim of a clear majority is embarrassing.”
They also asked, "Was it essential for the timing to align with the time when President Lee Jae-myung was abroad for the G20?" and stated, "We hope the party leadership will put in more effort to engage with party members."
