Peter Obi Speaks Out on Nnamdi Kanu's Sentence

The top opposition figure in Nigeria, Peter Obi, has responded to the conviction and life sentence given to the head of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing the outcome as a "failure of leadership" that could heighten national unrest.

On a post via his verified X account on Saturday, Obi mentioned that the sentencing occurs during a challenging period when Nigeria is facing significant economic difficulties, instability, and the effects of ineffective leadership.

He cautioned that the unfortunate situation could "likely worsen it," instead of easing the current national tension.

Full statement below;

I have always believed that Mazi Kanu should not have been detained. For many years, I have repeatedly stated that dialogue, positive interaction, and participatory leadership are the way to achieve long-term peace. Force is only required when all logical options have been considered.

In this instance, I argue that the reason was not only not exhausted, but likely remained unexamined or only partially examined. The concerns Kanu brought up were not novel. The problems he sought solutions for were not impossible to resolve.

It merely needed wisdom, compassion, and an openness to hear others. In a properly functioning society, these concerns are addressed through conversation and changes designed to enhance solidarity.

The government's strategy has further increased distrust and caused an unnecessary diversion during a period when people are struggling with difficult economic conditions and uncertainty.

Although some might argue that the law has been followed, effective leadership frequently requires more than a rigid, literal interpretation of the law. Countries across the globe turn to political approaches, negotiated agreements, and even amnesties when legal procedures alone fail to promote the larger goals of peace and stability. Nigeria is no different.

The management of Kanu's case resembles a government person stuck in a hole, yet instead of seeking an exit, continues to dig further. This exacerbates not only the government's situation but also the country's overall state.

If we genuinely wish for a new Nigeria — one that is united, peaceful, and advancing — our leaders need to opt for healing instead of hostility, reconciliation rather than retaliation, and conversation over division. Only through dealing with complaints with justice, equity, and kindness can we head toward a future where each Nigerian feels acknowledged, appreciated, and secure.

My final recommendation at this moment, without affecting anyone's perspective on the court's ruling, is for us to remain hopeful about peace and reconciliation that will eventually arrive.

I am also suggesting that the Presidency, the Council of State, and trustworthy statesmen who care for this nation and are concerned with unity and inclusiveness, should step up to the challenge, in pursuit of a permanent resolution.
