I wouldn't be surprised if the result had favored Wike if this had occurred under the previous military leaders, as they were less effective.
The Armed Forces Command issued a mysterious statement on its official social media account, just hours following the controversy. Analysts viewed it as a quiet reaction to the event. The message stated: 'IT IS AN HONOUR TO SERVE IN THE NIGERIAN MILITARY. UNSHAKEN. UNBENT. UNBROKEN.'
In the same way, the IGP issued an instruction to police personnel concerning these circumstances: 'No one should come and use you to … demolish other people's buildings in Abuja without a court order.' This suggests that the police viewed Wike's actions as an appeal to self-help, rather than a legal measure. Among prominent APC figures, the former Senate President, Ahman Lawal, voiced opposition to Wike's actions.
No, this is something Wike envisioned would occur. He believed he was still in a position where every statement he made would be accepted without doubt. He misunderstood the situation. He is no longer significant in APC political activities.
Regarding party sabotage, the relentless efforts that made him an essential player for the ruling party, Wike was unsuccessful in every attempt to halt the PDP's 20th national convention. Preventing this convention would have kept Wike significant within the current party, as he could have assisted them in attaining their goal of a one-party system in 2027. He did not succeed.
While Wike's supporters secured a High Court decision in Abuja to halt the convention, the High Court in Oyo State allowed the PDP convention to proceed. This outcome was unexpected, particularly considering the involvement of his former G-5 ally, Makinde. To many, the elections took place, which would have been unlikely just a few months prior. Law enforcement typically would have interfered with such events, as they did at Wadata Plaza. Those familiar with his path might suggest that the judges he relied on have let him down. This perception could arise from the idea that he is no longer as influential as he believed.
In addition to Wike's setbacks, the PDP convention decided to remove Wike and 10 of his allies. This group includes the former party Secretary, Anyanwu, ex-governor Fayose, former legal advisor, the faction head, and other important figures who supported his group. The concerning aspect for Wike is that it was Bode George who proposed the expulsion motion. Just a few months back, Bode George was collaborating with Wike. As his influence decreases, his support base continues to shrink.
His group requested a NEC meeting yesterday to address their stance. It continues to astonish me how Wike has the audacity to insist that his political opponents adhere to the law, despite his own lack of compliance.
However, this is not a novel occurrence in Nigerian politics. Politicians often view power as something that never expires, which is why they frequently vanish from the public eye without notice. Similar to other politicians, including his peers and former governors, Wike has established his influence through fear, access to power, and the assumption that the state would always comply with his demands. When these foundations start to crumble, his prominence begins to fade. What is left is a politician who confused the misuse of power with a plan and media visibility with true authority. The past week demonstrated that even in Abuja, there are boundaries.
The harsh reality for him is that politics seldom shows mercy to those who push too hard. His supporters are beginning to distance themselves, his authority within the PDP has crumbled, and the ruling party no longer requires his contributions. When a politician is no longer of value to his allies or feared by his opponents, he loses all significance—he becomes politically irrelevant. The nation will continue without him, just as it has with numerous others in the past.
