A Decade Later, Paris Remembers the 13 November Tragedy
Thousands of Parisians assembled at the Place de la République in the heart of Paris on Thursday night, holding candles and flowers, to pay tribute to the 132 individuals who lost their lives in the November 13, 2015 attacks — a tragic evening that reshaped France forever, ten years later.
During the day, the city conducted a number of quiet ceremonies presided over by President Emmanuel Macron, who was accompanied by his wife Brigitte Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.
Victims, relatives, and past officials accompanied the president to every attack location — including the cafes and terraces of the 10th and 11th districts, the Stade de France, and the Bataclan concert venue.
At every stop, names were spoken softly, a time of shared memory for those who had perished.
The ceremonies concluded with the opening of the 13 November Memory Garden close to Paris City Hall.
As darkness settled, the Eiffel Tower illuminated once more with blue, white, and red — the colors of the French flag — as church bells, such as those from Notre-Dame, echoed throughout the city.
Music was a key element in the evening ceremony. The faces of the 132 victims were displayed on the front of the Saint-Gervais church, while their names were announced by unknown heroes from that night, including police officers and emergency personnel who responded during the attacks.
Emmanuel Macron, Anne Hidalgo, and representatives from victim groups, Arthur Dénouveaux and Philippe Duperron, each gave addresses, after which a moment of silence was observed.
Many people who experienced the attacks find that the 10-year anniversary evokes the same memories and queries — especially for police officers who entered the Bataclan as the incident occurred.
Michel Caboche, a member of the BAC75 police group that entered the Bataclan concert venue, remembers the instant his team forced their way through the doors.
"Several terrorists remained inside, and we had no idea where they were or how many there were, but we needed to take action... I pushed through the swinging door and was blinded by the stage lights. A scent of blood and gunpowder filled the air, with spent bullet casings scattered across the floor... Bodies were entangled... Injured individuals were present, along with the cries and screams of those who were dying. It's a scene that stays with you forever," he said to Euronews.
He mentions that the years that have passed haven't significantly removed the burden of that night. "After ten years, I can say that time aids in healing the pain, but it doesn't fix it... Were the choices made at that time the correct ones? Did they save lives?... That is the feeling that remained with me for a long time.”
He also recounted the instance when a severely wounded woman grabbed his leg, pleading for his assistance — a scene that continues to trouble him.
"She pleaded with me to rescue her... and regrettably, this woman passed away that night," he stated during the Bataclan memorial event on Thursday.
Lawyer Philippe de Veulle is representing Laura Appoloni, who was shot at the Bataclan and then climbed to the roof to flee.
He informed Euronews that a bullet almost cut off her arm, leading her to leave her tattoo studio and embark on a prolonged struggle to gain official acknowledgment and assistance.
She currently resides in Italy and has returned to Paris for the first time since the incident — yet she still refuses to go into the concert venue.
For some, the anniversary provides a sense of continuity instead of finality. Cyril Beaudaux, who was present at the concert hall with his wife and son, mentions that every year brings the same combination of recollections.
"We recalled all the images and feelings... Ten years is a notable figure, naturally, but each year was the same," he said to Euronews.
He emphasizes that the trauma is not something one easily moves on from. "I don't think you can say we want to turn the page... It's something that is part of us and therefore shapes us." His family remained hidden in a room above the Bataclan for almost four hours before the police rescued them.
A decade later, the city continues to show the marks of that night — in recollections, in loss, and in the extended journey toward healing for those who endured it.
However, the gatherings at Place de la République, the music during the evening ceremony, and the illumination of the Eiffel Tower reveal a different reality: that the essence of Paris remains strong.
