A group of bandits who reportedly kidnapped approximately 35 worshippers from the Christ Apostolic Church in Oke-Igan, Eruku, within the Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, have allegedly requested a ransom of N100 million for each captive, according to information obtained by The PUNCH.
Several family sources and community figures verified on Thursday that the abductors have reached out to the victims' relatives, utilizing the phones of those taken during the attack that occurred on Tuesday evening.
The CAC assembly's secretary, Josiah Agbabiaka, informed The PUNCH that certain families had already been contacted by the kidnappers.
It is accurate that the bandits have begun reaching out to family members through the victims' phones to request a ransom.
"According to the information we received, they separated the victims. The first group of 11 individuals was requested to pay N100 million each," Agbabiaka stated.
Additionally verifying the progress, the Olori Eta of Eruku, Chief Olusegun Olukotun, whose four relatives were among the kidnapped, mentioned that the abductors were contacting people in an organized manner.
"Some individuals within the community have been contacted by the kidnappers, who are asking for N100 million for each person. They mentioned that the victims are divided into groups and they are reaching out to the families of each group," he said to The PUNCH.
Olukotun, who claimed he was in the church with five of his family members during the incident, stated that he was able to flee through a window while the others were taken away.
In the meantime, the traditional leader of the town, Owa of Eruku, Oba Busari Olarewaju, has called for immediate government action to facilitate the safe retrieval of the affected individuals.
The ruler, who praised the quick mobilization of soldiers to the community after the state governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, visited on Wednesday, nevertheless emphasized that further actions were required.
Last night, troops arrived in our neighborhood just minutes after the governor's visit. Their arrival provided us with a sense of comfort that the government is taking action.
"But we continue to urge that actions should be accelerated to save our citizens as soon as possible," the ruler stated.
Upon being reached by our reporter, the Governor's Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, chose not to respond.

Nevertheless, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, stated that the command had not received any formal notice of a ransom request.

"Our tactical units, in collaboration with the military and other security organizations, are present on the scene and working together to save the kidnapped individuals," she stated when reached by The PUNCH on Thursday.
Ejire-Adeyemi mentioned that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, had requested community members and family of the kidnapped individuals to share prompt information that could assist the operation.
"The CP guarantees residents that the police will keep making every effort to protect lives and property in Kwara State," she further stated.
The assault on the Eruku church is the most recent of numerous violent events that have unsettled populations throughout Kwara State in the past few months.
Recent events have increased concerns about the expanding influence of banditry in Kwara, a region that has traditionally been seen as one of the more secure areas in the North-Central part of the country.
