Weather experts stated that the nation remains under the influence of a cold, Arctic air mass, with temperatures set to decrease significantly this evening, dropping well below zero degrees.
Residents were advised to anticipate icy areas on certain untreated roads, sidewalks, and bike trails, as temperatures could drop as low as -12C in rural regions of Scotland.
Approximately 100 schools or nurseries closed in northern Scotland; meanwhile, 33 schools were shut down in North Yorkshire, with eight more classified as completely closed in East Yorkshire.
Thirty schools closed in Pembrokeshire, 14 in Carmarthenshire, and seven in Ceredigion — with National Grid reporting that hundreds of homes in those parts of Wales experienced power outages.
It followed temperatures in Northern Ireland, England, and Wales dropping to their lowest of the season so far last night.
The minimum temperatures overnight reached -6.6C at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire, -6.4C in Sennybridge, Powys, and -2.8C at Altnahinch Filters in County Antrim.
The lowest temperature recorded in Scotland during the night and early morning was -6.4C at Dundreggan, Inverness.
The UK's Met Office reported that a weather station in Altnaharra, located in the Scottish Highlands, measured 9cm of snow today, whereas Dyce in Aberdeenshire recorded 6cm.
Aviemore in Invernesshire recorded 5cm, Lake Vyrnwy in Powys, Wales, had 4cm, Boulmer in Northumberland received 3cm, and Bodmin in Cornwall saw 2cm.
The meteorological department also mentioned 'thundersnow' — a phenomenon where thunderstorms occur during cold weather and result in heavy snowfall — was observed in Aberdeenshire and near the coast in the northeast yesterday.
A representative stated, "There is a possibility we might witness additional activity today near the shores of eastern Scotland and the northeast coast of England."
Residents in North Yorkshire have been advised to limit travel to essential trips following significant snowfall that affected road conditions and caused delays in waste collection services.
In Sunderland, a vehicle flipped over on the A19 due to snowfall, while in Pembrokeshire, the local council issued a warning that 'extremely dangerous conditions' were present on most roads in the region as snow continued.
Several roads in Pembrokeshire have been closed, including the B4329 Preseli Road, with vehicles obstructing the B4314 between Tavernspite and Cold Blow.
A total of 631 homes had no electricity, the county council stated.
A yellow alert was active in the Northeast until 9 p.m., with the Met Office warning that regular icy showers might result in 'substantial snow buildup'.
This might result in vehicles being stuck, homes losing electricity, remote residences becoming isolated, and interruptions in public transportation.
Eight yellow weather alerts for snow and ice were active in different areas across the UK today, covering Northern Scotland, South West Wales, and Cornwall.
Chief forecaster at the Met Office, Steve Willington, stated: 'We are still experiencing a cold, Arctic air mass today and through Friday, which indicates additional wintry showers for certain areas, along with ice, especially during the night.'
Several alerts are active, and additional warnings have been issued for the night time.
Temperatures are expected to drop significantly tonight, with minimums possibly hitting -12C in rural areas of Scotland and remaining well below zero in other regions.
As temperatures drop during the night, ice will develop on uncovered surfaces and could lead to some travel interruptions this evening and through Friday morning.
Over 90 schools closed in Aberdeenshire, and two in Moray, in Scotland.
In the Highlands, seven locations were shut down, while numerous others postponed their opening times because of the weather conditions.
The circumstances also led to road interruptions in the area.
The A90 in Aberdeen was shut in both directions this morning between the Cleanhill and Stonehaven roundabouts due to snow, with many vehicles reported stuck. Authorities urged drivers to stay away from the area.
Tomorrow, the weather will become drier for most, while temperatures will slowly warm up, and rain is expected to arrive in the West later.
By the weekend, meteorologists predict a 'transition to warmer, more variable, Atlantic-influenced conditions'.
This is anticipated to 'result in cloud, rain, and occasional stronger winds, yet also lead to a decrease in the winter-related dangers experienced in recent days'.
The Meteorological Office is also monitoring Wales and the Midlands, where wet soil conditions could raise the chances of minor effects.
The weather is expected to stay cold, but temperatures will slowly return to normal levels for this time of the year.
Moving into next week, the Met Office stated a 'slow stabilization trend is anticipated'.
This will involve 'north to northeasterly winds restricting rain and showers mainly to eastern regions, while cooler air moving in from the north could lead to some wintry conditions developing in the far north of the country by the end of Monday'.
