Montserrado County Senator Abe Darius Dillon has expressed concern over threats to his safety, stating that increasing political aggression from backers of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) has put him in personal danger.
The senator presented the assertion during Tuesday's Senate session, where he outlined what he referred to as an increasing effort of false information associating him with opposition toward Nimba County.
As per Senator Dillon, the allegations arise from his supervision of the Ministry of Labor and specifically his demand that Minister Cooper Kruah report on the enforcement of work permits.
The senator stated that his inquiries to the minister were strictly administrative, yet they have been distorted into a political story implying he is against Nimba County, the origin of Minister Kruah and numerous MDR supporters.
Senator Dillon remembered that during Minister Kruah's confirmation hearing, he expressed worries about enhancing the work permit system to focus on job opportunities for Liberians. He mentioned that Minister Kruah promised to submit a progress report within six months, a pledge the senator felt required further attention when no update was received.
As per Senator Dillon, this routine review quickly faced criticism. He mentioned that high-ranking members of the MDR, including people employed in the Ministry of Labor, started depicting his questions as an effort to weaken the county and hinder Nimba's political power at the national level. He informed the Senate that this description is completely untrue but is being strongly spread through radio stations, social media sites, and political discussion boards.
The legislator mentioned that the situation escalated when Minister Kruah addressed a government press conference organized by the Ministry of Information. Senator Dillon stated that the minister publicly asserted that the senator's criticism of his work stemmed from a bias toward Nimba County. Senator Dillon added that the minister also claimed the senator had a pattern of targeting Nimba politicians, including those who held positions in earlier governments. These remarks were transmitted live and gained significant traction online, increasing tensions among MDR supporters.
Senator Dillon also stated that an assistant secretary from the MDR, who works at the Ministry of Labor, appeared on the radio in Nimba County and blamed him for the death of the late Nimba Senator Prince Johnson.
He stated that the official additionally asserted that Senator Dillon aimed to bring about the collapse or potential damage to other Nimba leaders. Senator Dillon labeled these accusations as "careless, inflammatory, and highly dangerous," pointing out that they came from a staff member of the same ministry whose policies he is required to scrutinize.
The senator mentioned that the Deputy Director of Communications from the Ministry of Labor also made public statements alleging that he is working against the government's unity initiative and trying to stop residents of Nimba from attaining high national roles. He noted that these ongoing accusations have gained traction among part of the MDR supporters, who now openly label him as an "enemy" of Nimba County.
As per Senator Dillon, the pattern of attacks suggests that the claims are not random but seem to be organized. He mentioned that Minister Kruah is the head of the MDR, which grants him considerable influence over the party's communication and political strategy. Senator Dillon stated that the overlap between party officials and ministry employees heightens the seriousness of the accusations, leading to a situation where political differences are being transformed into ethnic or regional tensions.
While speaking, Senator Dillon reminded his fellow senators that he had previously questioned government nominees regarding citizenship and legal adherence, yet was never accused of opposing any group of Liberians. He mentioned several confirmation disputes from the previous administration where the Senate rejected people he believed were unfit. Senator Dillon stated that these actions were never seen as targeting any ethnic group, and he questioned why current routine oversight is now being viewed in such a provocative manner.
A senator from Montserrado stated that the language promoted by MDR officials and their supporters has significant security consequences. He cautioned that these stories, when aimed at an elected official, could lead to actions from people who might see them as encouragement to challenge or attack him.
Senator Dillon stated that throughout Liberia's history, comparable accusations have emerged during times of political unrest, leading to violence, which makes the present situation even more concerning.
Senator Dillon informed his fellow lawmakers that he harbors no ill will toward Nimba County and highlighted that he supported the confirmation of Minister Kruah in good faith. He mentioned that he anticipated the minister to uphold his promise regarding work permit changes and keep a professional connection, rather than viewing oversight as a form of political conflict.
The senator urged the Senate to bring in Minister Kruah and all involved parties to explain their public remarks and respond to the accusations. He stated that the issue is more than just political and now risks creating division among counties, weakening efforts to maintain national unity, and damaging public confidence in the Legislature's oversight role.
Senator Dillon called on the Senate to take action before the circumstances escalate, stating that the claims being made about him are not only false but could lead to unwarranted tension if not addressed.
Attempts to contact Minister Kruah for a statement by the time of publication were unsuccessful.
