Dhaka, November 21 -- Senior leader of BNP, Professor AZM Zahid Hossain stated on Friday that the government needs to implement prompt and immediate actions to safeguard citizens from the threat of earthquakes.

"Following this morning's earthquake, there is no basis to believe we are secure," he stated during a forum.

Dr. Zahid, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, stated that if the interim government does not implement urgent actions immediately, the outcomes could be severe, particularly given the vulnerable state of numerous historic structures in Old Dhaka. "Consider the buildings in Old Dhaka and then recall the earthquakes in Turkiye, Iran, or Afghanistan."

Zahid stated that specialists from various fields, such as geologists, architects, urban planners, and other professionals, need to collaborate with government agencies to ensure effective earthquake readiness.

"This is the appropriate moment. If we postpone any longer, the harm might be significantly greater. We need to take action immediately to minimize losses," he stated.

The leader of the BNP also mentioned the current global climate conference taking place in Brazil, stating that major polluting nations were not adequately assisting in mitigating the effects of global warming on countries heavily impacted, such as Bangladesh.

Consequently, he stated, the impacts of climate change are already evident in Bangladesh. "You can observe winters extending, summers turning more intense, and low-lying regions being submerged. Compare the current climate and geopolitical conditions with those from 20, 25, or 50 years ago – the transformation is clearly visible."

The Jatiyatabadi Matsyajibi Dal (North and South Dhaka units) organized the event, commemorating the National Revolution and Unity Day of the historic November 7, 1975.

On Friday morning, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Dhaka and various regions in Bangladesh, as reported by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

The earthquake took place approximately at 10:38 am and continued for roughly one minute.

At that instant, as the earthquake hit, BNP leaders, supporters, and individuals participating in the event swiftly exited the Press Club auditorium due to panic.

Dr. Zahid voiced worry about the latest fire-related incidents, which are said to have been committed by individuals affiliated with the former Awami League.

Major earthquake results in five fatalities and numerous injuries throughout Bangladesh

He mentioned that individuals continue to recall the fire attack at the Sheraton Hotel, where 11 people perished in a double-decker BRTC bus due to gunpowder during a 174-day closure imposed by the Awami League.

"Individuals responsible for those actions are currently standing trial. Prior to the ruling in their case, they attempted through various means to stir up chaos and instability within the nation, and they have once more resorted to the same familiar tactics of violent arson," stated the BNP leader.

He stated that the country stayed united following the mass protest on August 5, but any current division would only benefit the followers of the "deposed and escaped dictator."

"The dictator might have left, but her allies are still present in the nation. We need to remain vigilant regarding the individuals nearby and their actions," Zahid warned.

The head of the BNP called on political parties to get ready to obtain public approval via the upcoming national elections scheduled for early next year.
