Boko Haram's Worst Days Behind, Zulum Tells COAS

The Governor of Borno, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has claimed that the most severe phase of the Boko Haram insurgency has ended, despite recognizing a recent increase in attacks by the extremist group.

On Wednesday, Governor Zulum issued the statement during a meeting with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Shuaibu Waidi, in Maiduguri.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya mentioned that the governor, during his speech, also discussed the more severe security conditions the state had faced earlier. He pointed out that although there have been recent challenges, the present security situation is considerably better than it was at the height of the crisis in previous years.

Zulum also appealed to the citizens of Borno State to keep offering their essential cooperation and support to the military and other security forces. He highlighted that the fight against terrorism demands a united effort, encouraging locals to remain alert and share prompt information with security personnel to stop attacks and achieve long-term peace in the state.

"Yes, we have seen a number of attacks against our communities and the security personnel, but the worst has passed; we will keep working together and supply the necessary information to our security forces to put an end to this chaos," Zulum stated.

"The intensity and magnitude of the attacks on our communities back then were staggering. Now, although we mourn every individual loss, we can also recognize that the worst has truly passed. The path is moving toward peace, and we are determined to maintain it," he added.

Zulum expressed sympathy with the Nigerian Army regarding the recent strategic challenges within the region. He commended the dedication and courage of the officers and soldiers, referring to them as heroes who, in certain instances, give their lives for the country's safety.

The governor stated on behalf of the government and residents of Borno State that they remain supportive of the Nigerian Armed Forces personnel. They will not overlook the sacrifices made by these officers and soldiers.

Additionally, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Waidi, assured the Army headquarters would supply essential logistics to the troops and also praised Governor Zulum for his backing of the military.

He stated, "I sincerely, on behalf of the officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army, express our gratitude to His Excellency for visiting us during this critical time. We value your support in Borno."

He stated, "We have faith in our community here at the theatre and from the Army command, we will supply all the required resources to help them accomplish their objectives."

The gathering included the Acting Chief of Staff, Dr Babagana Mustapha Mallumbe, Commissioner of Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar, Special Adviser on Security, Brigadier General Abdullaho Ishaq (Retired), along with other high-ranking government officials.
