The tech company Meta started on Thursday sending thousands of young Australians a two-week notice to remove their digital records and delete their accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads before a pioneering social media restriction for children under 16 comes into force.
The Australian government revealed two weeks back that the three Meta services along with Snapchat, TikTok, X, and YouTube are required to implement reasonable measures to prevent users under 16 from accessing their accounts, starting from December 10.
The tech company Meta, based in California, became the first among the affected firms to detail its approach to adhering to the regulation. Meta reached out to thousands of young users through text messages and emails, informing them that accounts suspected to belong to minors will face restricted access starting December 4.
"Today, we will begin informing affected teenagers so they can save their contacts and memories," Meta stated in a release.
Meta mentioned that younger users could utilize the notice period to update their contact details "so we can reach out and assist them in regaining access once they turn 16."
Meta has estimated that 350,000 Australians between the ages of 13 and 15 are active on Instagram, with 150,000 in the same age group using Facebook. The total population of Australia is 28 million.
Individuals aged 16 and above who were incorrectly informed they would be excluded may reach out to Yoti Age Verification to confirm their age by submitting official identification documents or a "video selfie," according to Meta.
Terry Flew, who serves as co-director of the Center for AI, Trust, and Governance at Sydney University, mentioned that this facial recognition technology has a failure rate of no less than 5%.
"Without a government-imposed identification system, we're constantly faced with less-than-ideal alternatives in these matters," Flew said to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.
The authorities have cautioned platforms that requiring all users to verify they are over 15 would be an excessive reaction to the updated age rules. The government states that the platforms already possessed enough information about many users to determine they were not young children.
Not taking appropriate measures to keep young children away may result in platforms being fined as much as 50 million Australian dollars ($32 million).
The vice president and global head of safety at Meta, Antigone Davis, stated that she would rather app stores, such as the Apple App Store and Google Play, gather age details during user registration and confirm that individuals are at least 16 years old for app providers like Facebook and Instagram.
"We think a more effective method is necessary: a standardized, more precise, and privacy-friendly system, like age verification at the OS/app store level," Davis stated in a release.
"This, along with our investments in continuous initiatives to ensure age … provides a more thorough safeguard for young individuals online," she added.
Dany Elachi, the creator of the parents' organization Heaps Up Alliance, which advocated for a minimum age limit on social media use, stated that parents should begin assisting their children in planning how they will utilize the time previously spent on social media platforms.
He expressed disapproval of the government's decision to reveal only the full list of platforms that will be subject to age restrictions on November 5.
"Some parts of the law are not fully supported by us, but the idea that kids below 16 are better off in the real world is something we have promoted and agree with," Elachi stated.
"When everyone is left out, no one is left out. That's the concept. We certainly anticipate it will unfold in this manner. We hope parents will be highly supportive and encourage their children to recognize all the opportunities that are now available to them," he added.
