Breaking: Nnamdi Kanu Sentenced to Life for Terrorism

By Kazeem Ugbodaga and Paul Dada

Federal High Court Judge James Omotosho on Thursday handed down a life sentence to Nnamdi Kanu, head of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), bringing to a close a widely publicized trial that has spanned several years.

The punishment came after his conviction on Thursday for the seven-count terrorism charges brought against him.

The judge stated that while the prisoner warranted the death penalty for certain charges, he chose to show compassion in accordance with Jesus' teaching found in Matthew 23:23. He further mentioned that he opted against imposing the harshest punishment because the death penalty is increasingly being rejected worldwide.

It is certain the prisoner has not behaved properly... However, the court will not take this into account during sentencing due to divine reasons. The court is merely showing compassion.

The judge sentenced him to life in prison for charges 1, 4, 5, and 6. For charge 3, he received a 20-year prison term without the possibility of a fine. Kanu was also given an additional five years in jail for charge 7. The judge ruled that all sentences should be served at the same time.

Justice Omotosho additionally directed that Kanu be transferred to a prison appropriate for his condition due to his history of violent behavior. Specifically, he mandated that he not be housed at Kuje Custodial Centre.

He mentioned that Kanu utilized electronic gadgets to provoke unrest.

Considering this, without any hesitation, I support the prosecution's stance; the convicted individual should not be permitted to use any digital device. And if necessary, his usage must be supervised by the National Security Adviser's office.

He stated, "I command that he remains under protective detention in any detention facility within the nation."

Additionally, the judge also mandated that the broadcast transmitter which Kanu illegally brought into the country be surrendered to the Federal Government.

Kanu, who was detained in Kenya under disputed conditions four years back and sent to Nigeria, was charged with seven terrorism-related offenses.

The decision was made in his absence following his refusal to take part in the trial, maintaining that the court lacked jurisdiction over him concerning the terrorism allegations.

His rejection caused the presiding judge to instruct security officers to escort him out of the courtroom due to disruptive conduct.

In his decision, Judge Omotosho referenced multiple transmissions by Kanu on Radio Biafra, which he classified as acts of terrorism, highlighting that his speech and instructions were based on violence.

The judge also mentioned that Kanu's implementation of stay-at-home mandates in the South-Eastern states constituted terrorism, as it violated individuals' right to move freely and went beyond any constitutional power.

The court also pointed out evidence showing that Kanu, via his broadcasts, took actions that prepared for terrorism, such as encouraging the killing of police and military members. According to the evidence, the court convicted him on all seven charges, even though he pleaded not guilty.

Justice Omotosho determined that Kanu's behavior amounted to terrorist acts directed at the Federal Republic of Nigeria, upholding the life sentence as a warning against dangers to national security.
