Re: The attack on Christ Apostolic Church, Eruku, Kwara State
It was with a heavy heart and profound sadness that the leadership of Christ Apostolic Church, Nigeria and abroad learned about the devastating attack by militants on a church gathering in Eruku, within the Ekiti Local Government Area.Kwara State. It has been reported that three individuals from the Church died in the event, while the local Pastor and several other members were taken captive.
Above all, our thoughts are with the families of those who have passed away. We join you in your sorrow and pray that God will offer you comfort and strength to endure your losses. We also continue to pray for those who have been taken, asking that they may be released soon and without harm, in the name of Jesus.
As with previous sacrilegious attacks on places of worship, the Church authorities have denounced this brutal attack on the CAC Church in Eruku entirely. It is inhumane and diabolical, representing a direct strike against the shared humanity of all reasonable Nigerians.
The tragic incident highlights the deep failure of the Federal Government in fulfilling one of its core constitutional responsibilities: safeguarding its people. The ongoing series of terrorist attacks on places of worship also verifies that Christianity in Nigeria is facing a serious existential danger.
It is a shared disgrace for all of us as a country and a betrayal of the memory of those who lost their lives in terrorist attacks, that the typical response from our government following such events is only public criticism in the media, after which the nation carries on and the government resumes its usual routine.
Another major source of deep disappointment is the role—or lack thereof—played by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and other Christian groups formed to represent the needs of the Christian population. It could be argued that there has never been a period in recent history where CAN had a greater obligation to speak up for its community. In our view, the appeals made by Reverend Ezekiel Dachomo from Plateau State, which significantly brought international attention to the crimes occurring in Nigeria, should have been the responsibility and right of CAN and similar Christian organizations. Unfortunately, CAN has failed in this crucial duty.
With the highest regard, the silence of CAN regarding the genocide against Christians in Nigeria has been extremely noticeable. CAN must fulfill its holy duty and restore the trust of Christians, as the organization that represents the interests of Christians and Christian groups in Nigeria.
We also urge the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to quickly respond to the current crisis. The President must recognize the harsh truth that our beloved country may currently be on the verge of falling into a failed state unless decisive measures are implemented to tackle the increasing threat of insecurity. Humblely, simply instructing the military to carry out their legal responsibilities is insufficient. It is deeply alarming that, even as this article was being composed, we received an updated report indicating that approximately 50 students were taken from a Catholic secondary school in Niger State!
There is an immediate requirement for the announcement of a national state of emergency, along with a focused and determined effort to counter terrorism. A war must be declared against terrorists, and this should become the top priority of governmental policies and initiatives. Among other advantages, these measures will also assist in shifting the increasing public distrust regarding the government's involvement with those responsible for terrorist acts.
While terrorist attacks primarily focus on Christians, every law-abiding and sensible Nigerian is affected, either directly or indirectly, regardless of our religious or ethnic backgrounds. Consequently, we also extend our message to the Muslim community in Nigeria, encouraging them to join us in rejecting and addressing this terrible threat of terrorism and senseless violence carried out in the name of religion.
To our fellow members of the Christ Apostolic Church, both at home and overseas, this is a time more than ever to set aside the minor issues that separate us and come together to confront a shared threat. Let us recall our admirable history and spiritual legacy of powerful prayers and prophetic guidance, for the benefit of our cherished members, not only in Eruku but across the globe. Furthermore, Nigeria requires our prayers now more than ever, yet such effective prayers can only be effective when we are united.
In conclusion, we call on all Christians from various denominations to focus more on safety within their gatherings, as these are challenging times. We must also unite in continuous prayer to God, seeking His mercy and healing for our country, as stated in 2 Chronicles 7:14.
May God listen to our prayers and reveal all the sponsors and doers of evil in Nigeria. May the beginning of a new and magnificent Nigeria arrive through unity, peace, and justice. Amen.
