A major fire has caused disruption toUnited NationsCOP30 climate negotiations taking place today led to the evacuation of multiple buildings, even before any significant agreements were announced by the negotiators.
The blaze tore through a section with pavilions where side events take place during the discussions.
Event organizers swiftly stated that the fire was contained, yet authorities mandated a full evacuation of the premises for safety inspections, and it remained uncertain when the conference activities would restart.
They mentioned that 13 individuals received treatment for smoke inhalation after the fire, which was controlled within approximately six minutes.
Viliami Vainga Tone, with theTongagroup, had just left a top-level ministerial meeting when many individuals rushed by him yelling about the fire.
He found himself among individuals forcibly removed from the location by Brazilian and UN security personnel.
Mr. Tone referred to time as the most valuable asset at Cop and expressed his disappointment that it has become even more limited due to the fire.
"We must maintain our hope. There is always tomorrow, even if not the rest of today. However, we do have a complete day ahead tomorrow," Mr. Tone said to The Associated Press.
Official climate discussions at the COP30 conference in Brazil are set to continue on Friday morning, according to Reuters.
Several hours prior to the fire, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on nations to make concessions and 'demonstrate openness and adaptability to achieve outcomes,' even if these do not meet the most stringent actions desired by certain countries.
"We're at the final moment and the world is observing Belem," Guterres stated, urging negotiators to participate in good faith during the remaining two days of discussions.
However, the conference has already failed to meet a deadline set by itself on Wednesday regarding advancements on several important matters.
It often extends beyond its planned two-week period.
Communities at the forefront are also observing - tallying flooded homes, failed crops, and lost sources of income - and questioning, "how much more must we endure?"' Guterres stated. 'They have heard enough excuses and are demanding outcomes.
On disputed matters concerning more elaborate strategies to eliminatefossil fuelsand financial assistance for less affluent nations, Guterres stated he was 'fully confident' that an agreement could be reached.
He also rejected the notion that failing to implement the most rigorous actions would constitute a shortcoming.
When asked if he had a message for US President Donald Trump, who has removed the world's second-largest carbon emitter from climate discussions, he responded: "We are waiting for you."
When questioned whether there was any possibility that Trump would alter his stance on climate change, Guterres smiled and replied, "Hope is the last thing that dies."
During a UN meeting in September, Trump referred to climate change forecasts as a "scam." The U.S. federal government is not participating in the discussions taking place in Belem, near the Amazon.
Guterres was more determined about what he wanted wealthy nations to do for less fortunate countries, particularly those requiring tens of billions of dollars to cope with floods, droughts, storms, and heatwaves caused by deteriorating climate change. He reiterated his demand to increase adaptation funding threefold, from £30.6 billion annually to £91.7 billion per year.
Representatives from countries affected by natural disasters shared heartfelt statements earlier this week, urging the global community to move beyond words and take real action.
"No delegation will depart from Belem having obtained all it desires, but each delegation has an obligation to achieve a fair agreement," Guterres stated.
"Every nation, particularly the major polluters, needs to take greater action," Guterres stated.
Providing total financial assistance—targeting £2290.4 billion annually—is one of four related matters that were initially not included on the official schedule. The remaining three topics are: whether nations should be urged to strengthen their new climate strategies; addressing trade obstacles concerning climate change and enhancing transparency and reporting on climate progress.
COP30 President André Corrêa do Lago set a Wednesday deadline for negotiators to present some form of agreement on the four issues, but no resolution was apparent.
Over 80 nations have advocated for a comprehensive 'road map' detailing the process of shifting away from fossil fuels, including coal, oil, and natural gas, which are primarily responsible for climate change. This was a broad and unclear agreement reached two years ago during the COP meeting in Dubai.
Guterres continuously mentioned that it had already been decided in Dubai, yet he did not provide a specific plan, a detail that Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had advocated for earlier in his speech.
