Flood Death Toll Reaches 55 in Central Vietnam as Rivers Recede
The number of fatalities caused by extensive flooding and landslides in central Vietnam has risen to 55, according to officials who reported on Saturday, with 13 individuals still unaccounted for.
Dak Lak has been the most severely affected province, with 27 fatalities, followed by Khanh Hoa having 14. Gia Lai and Lam Dong each reported five deaths, while the other two deaths occurred in Hue and Da Nang. In total, 13 individuals remain unaccounted for, mostly in Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa.
The number of casualties rose by 10 compared to the previous day while disaster evaluations were ongoing, despite the fact that water levels in numerous major rivers started to decrease.
The Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention stated that rain levels dropped considerably on Friday in Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa, and Lam Dong provinces, with isolated amounts staying under 30 mm all day.
Early Saturday measurements indicated a decrease in water levels on major rivers across the area, yet they still present a significant risk.
The Krong Ana River in Dak Lak is still 2.06 meters above the alert level three, which is the highest level of warning; the Serepok River, also located in Dak Lak, remains 3.46 meters above level three.
In Khanh Hoa, which is home to the popular beach city of Nha Trang, the Dinh Ninh Hoa River measured 0.27 meters above level three, while the Ba River was slightly lower, recorded at 0.3 meters below level two.
Meteorologists at the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting stated that in the coming 24 hours, the Krong Ana River will keep decreasing but stay above alert level three. The Dinh Ninh Hoa River is predicted to vary between level two and three, while the Ba River downstream will be approximately at level one.
The danger has not yet passed, as the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting cautioned that rainfall is anticipated to persist in the following days. Even though the water levels have decreased, the possibility of sudden flooding and landslides is still significant, and aid operations are being carried out continuously.
On Saturday, regions in the east from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak, along with northern Khanh Hoa, are expected to experience 30–60 mm of precipitation, with some areas seeing more than 120 mm of rain.
Sunday is also anticipated to bring rain to Hue and the eastern regions of provinces stretching from Da Nang to Gia Lai, with overall rainfall amounts ranging from 30 to 70 mm.
Authorities state that 946 homes have been damaged, with almost 780 located in Lam Dong. Around 28,500 residences are still flooded on Saturday, primarily in Dak Lak (11,600), Khanh Hoa (10,400), and Gia Lai (6,500).
Initial economic damages are valued at more than VND8.98 trillion (US$340.7 million), an increase of almost VND6 trillion compared to the previous day's assessment.
Losses consist of almost 80,000 hectares of rice and other crops, over 100,000 hectares of long-term crops, 3.2 million animals, and more than 1.1 hectares of fish farming.
The transportation and utility systems are severely affected, with 16 points on national highways and 180 locations on provincial and local roads experiencing flooding or damage, leading to disruptions. Train services across central Vietnam have been halted since November 19. Although power has been restored to over 800,000 homes, more than 370,000 customers in Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa, and Gia Lai are still without electricity, following the flood's peak, when almost 1.2 million households lost power.
